Some iPhone owners report grainy screen issues

It turns out that not all iPhones are created equal.  Some owners are reporting issues with screen brightness and patterns of dots appearing on areas of solid black; it looks like different manufacturing versions of iPhone - all first generation but, when in the Field Test mode, showing LCD versions either 5755136 or 7455232 - have slightly different multi-touch screens.

Owners of 7455232 iPhones seem to be the ones having issues, with some reporting noticeable "checker patterns"; particularly concerned are those who have had to return their original handset due to another issue (the 5755136 version appeared to be the original model supplied at launch) and have been given a 7455232 as replacement.

Different owners are having different experiences; how about you?  Is your iPhone made with a 5 or 7 variant screen?  Are you happy with the contrast, or are you finding white dots?

I have a 7455232, and no dots or patterns with me.

  2. Chris Davies says:

Glad to hear it! It seems to be a very variable problem, there’s no guarantee that you’ll have a problem or not.

  3. David says:

I bought my iPhone the first hour it was available. It is version: 7455232

I have had zero problems and the screen is beautiful!

    Thanks!

A very happy Apple iPhone customer!

Like if you look really close you can see it but i dont see it as a problem, i had a original one since i was 3rd in line and i had the same pattern(i had to exchange it however), so i dont see the big deal. I cant notice it unlless i am looking for it. Mine looks exactly like the pic about though, same pattern. Is it a problem that i should exchange my phone over again.

I too have the 7 version but don’t have the dots. With the screen off and at the right angle I can see them, but barely.

  7. j00sh says:

  8. j00sh says:

Hmm should us grainy screen havers return our phones?

I have the “7″ screen, bought at the Apple store first thing that Saturday morning (30th). Looks very good even under a magnifying glass. No issues.

We have both the 5 and 7 series in the house. The 7 is far superior. The 5 is washed out, blueish background… clearly calibrated wrong. Our 7 has no dots and I’d give anything to exchange this for a 7 to get the 7′s good contrast, vividness and most of all – FAR easier readability.

That is interesting. The 7 is not nearly as bright as the 5. I just compared this lunch hour with a coworker. His 5 puts out a lot more light at full brightness than mine. Mine actually appears washed out in comparison.

Sounds like buying electronics is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get.

It’s OK for me. Any issue for me…
