We're big fans of OtterBox, ever since their laptop case survived Vincent driving over it back in 2006, and so it's great to see that they're planning to extend their rugged line to the iPhone. So far only concept renderings exist, but as is typical for the company it's not something that blends into the background!

Despite having three layers of protection, including a patented touch-screen membrane which allows for use while still protecting the handset, all of the buttons and features (such as the camera) are still usable thanks to pass-through controls and windows. Plugs cover the sync/charge and headphone ports until needed, and there's a belt-clip with rotating hinge.
No predicted date for release, but we'll keep you updated as we find out more.
[UPDATE per Vincent] I just heard back from Kristin at Otterbox:
Hi Vincent—
Good to hear from you!
Yes, this case is going to be truly amazing and UNLIKE anything we’ve done before. Keep in mind it is only a semi-rugged, water-resistant case, not completely waterproof like other OtterBox for iPod cases. I will keep you posted when review units are available in a couple months. Thanks.

Who’s going to tell them they didn’t allow for the light or proximity sensor at the top?

That’s a great point, I’ll let Kristin now per my previous post:
