iChat for iPhone: a Web 2.0 application

iPhoneChatIf this is the way it’s going to be, then so be it. iPhoneChat is one of the first and latest iPhone web applications for the iPhone.

Use your mouse to flick (drag and release) your buddy list up and down like you're supposed to on the iPhone. Click a buddy to start a conversation. You can open multiple conversations... flick left/right to change conversations.

This is an early version, so as expected there are limitations. It does how ever allow you to log into your iChat/AIM account with buddy list support.

Some observations from an old touch coder:

Of course, you’ll need a version without your scrolling for the real iPhone, since it’ll handle that, the address bar, etc.

Beware designing for mouse use. Touchscreen buttons should be minimum 1/2″ high x 1/2″ wide, with 1/8″ between them. For the iPhone, that means never more than four buttons across. Always leave about 8 pixels space from screen edges for input as well.

    Regards.

  2. Vincent Nguyen says:

yeah. the image on their site shows the application in portrait mode. i wonder what happens when you rotate it in landscape? does the developer need to program something special the ensure it works in either mode?

  3. Blogvasion says:

Cool application. The only drawback is that the user data passes through the developer server. While the developer claims that no data is harvested, still it’s of a bit concern to provide your account details.

All in all, this is one of the earliest iPhone Web 2.0 apps and hope to see many more coming in the near future.

I think that even if you use IM services through Sprint or Verizon, it also passes through their servers as well. Then again this is a developer’s server. Hmmm, not sure if i can trust it.

Yeah, not the best solution in the world. I suppose if you had an account not tied into anything else, the damage control would be minimal, but I wouldn’t use my regular .mac/iChat/AIM account.

    meebo.com, get with it.

  8. Is it just me or did this post strike a cord with others. Preserve writing this and I’ll be back.
