Here's a rather interesting bit of news. Apparently the EDGE network from AT&T isn't quite as fast as it could be. However, before the iPhone is released on June 29th they will complete their project “Fine Edge” to bring it up to full speed.
According to AT&T, the speed issue with their current EDGE network is a slow data backend and poor configuration of their towers. They are adding in additional T1 lines to their slower towers in an effort to bring the minimum connection speed up to 80kbps. Although that's double what they were running before, it's still no 3G connection. The project is set to be completed on June 15.
I'm a bit skeptical of this rumor, since you would think if AT&T could have sped up their network that they would have done it by now. However, if it turns out to be true, it will go a long way in showing what happens when you team up with Apple. It will be a great time for current AT&T subscribers, as this upgrade will affect anyone currently using their EDGE network.
iPhone Data to be Boosted by AT&T's Operation "Fine Edge" [via gizmodo]

it will be great to have “improved” performance, But, the biggest secret out there is what ATT will charge for wireless and data. Will it be from their standard menu or will it be a “special” iPhone rate. No one knows but we all (or at least I) speculate.
I just ran the iPhone network test over Edge and got 211 kbps
