While Engadget turned to the iPhoneSIMfree team to liberate their handset, if you don't mind waiting until the weekend there'll be another option for you. UK-based Uniquephones plan on launching their iphoneunlocking.com site on Saturday between noon and 2pm EST, charging you between $25 and $50 for the privilege of sticking whatever SIM you choose into your iPhone.
John McLaughlin, founder of Uniquephones, turned to a Russian software engineer to finally crack the iPhone's AT&T lock for his site, and he claims to now be using his own iPhone on the UK Vodafone network. Interestingly, cellular data access is apparently faster on the UK Vodafone and T-Mobile networks than it is on AT&T in the US.
Visual Voicemail is the conspicuously absent feature in the otherwise total unlock offered by both sites, due to its dependence on AT&T's servers.

Please someone know why Iphonunlocking needs the IMEI?
