After a slow start, MMS multimedia messages have become increasingly popular in the UK, but of course they're still unsupported by the iPhone. Clever coder Ross McKillop has done some lateral thinking, however, and put together an app that can work around the handset's limitations and give access to MMS content. Called MMS Inbox, it relies on the fact that O2 sends an SMS message to non-MMS compatible handsets when it receives a picture message, containing a link to the MMS content viewable on their website. What Ross' app does is streamline the way that site is accessed in Safari.

Currently in semi-closed beta, you'll need to email Ross to get a customised version of the MMS Inbox app - it stores your mobile number and the PIN O2 send in order to unlock the message online as a cookie on your iPhone so that you can be logged-in seamlessly.
Right now it only works on O2 (I presume because AT&T don't handle non-compatible phones in the same way) and you'll need to have the necessary PIN (which you can get by asking a friend to send you an MMS message). Future developments include a full version by the end of November and settings to allow MMS delivery by email.

“Clever Coder” - thanks :)
Thought it was worth mentioning that although still beta, it’s open to registration from anyone with an iPhone on O2 now :) … and the eMail feature’s in place.
Just visit http://iapps.co.uk/o2mms/ from your iPhone to get started and, as always, any comments or suggestions on how to improve this app are very welcome :)
