It’s not a small step either, they have full on read access to the entire drive. They have also figured out that installing the WiFi iTunes store app on older firmware won’t work, because if it did, they probably wouldn’t even bother hacking 1.1.1.

They are still missing executable and shell access. Now that they can see everything it should make gaining those two a lot easier and a lot quicker, I don’t know for sure though, as I am not nearly as apt at programming or hacking as these folks.

These iPhone and iPod Touch hackers truly are geniuses. One last piece of relevant news, the entire 3rd party applications scene has died, it was like a high school party with booze, speed, E and all that other fun stuff and then firmware 1.1.1 showed up like the police S.W.A.T. team and shut everything down. Hopefully all that will pick back up with updates to all the old apps so they will work with the new firmware once they finish hacking it.
iPhone 1.1.1 File System Acessed, Hacks Not Quite There [via Gizmodo]

You hackers are a waste of life in my book, and this blog glorifies hacking as if its removing the rock that covered Jesus’s tomb.
Why dont you try to do something more productive for the human race, and hack into the human physche and figure out how to stop crime, or world hunger, or the threat of terrorism.
BTW, u aint gonna get into 1.1.1 suckers lol
whahaha what stef says is just making me laughing, i think they are hacking every update there is fore the iphone, just like they do with the psp.
THESE hackers are creators, not destroyers. They use their technical and creative skills to enhance value for others. It’s awesome that they can take a great platform by Apple and make it even better.
Stef – You’ve contributed nothing to the dialogue or the value. Go nack under your rock.
It’s people like Stef that would probably like to see the Patent office shutdown. Hackers are innovators who in turn make Apple (and others) create better products. Get out of your bubble and step into the real word (no.. not MTV).
I have no doubt 1.1.1 will be cracked within the next week or so.
I have cracked about 35 iPhones, but I just bought 20 wich I opened the first two and I have in hand those iPhones with the new modem firmware 04.14.08_g, two questions: is there a way to know by the serial number or imei number if the phones have the old 03.14.08_g firmware instead of open them up?????
If you want to know your iPhone firmware version without unwrap and open up the package, the serial number of iPhone wrote on a sticker on the box may provide you some hint. In fact, if you order a phone online from Apple, it’s possible to see what is your iPhone’s serial number when you check your invoice online, even before before the phone arrives at your hand. A typical iPhone will have a serial number in the following format: 7T727XYZWH8. The serial number is made up of several blocks which have its own meaning, as explain below:
Digits 1 to 3 (7T7) = Year / Batch code
Digits 4 to 5 (27) = Week of manufacture
Digits 6 to 8 (XZY) = Unique identifier part of the S/N
Digits 9 to 11 (WH8) = 8Gb model
The only significant number in the serial ID number to help you guess which firmware version your iPhone has are digit 4 and digit 5, which show week of manufacturing of the iPhone. It has been known that iPhone version 1.1.1. started shipping to customers from week 39 onwards. So if your 4th and 5th digits in iPhone serial number is less than 39 (38 or lower), it’s almost certain that the iPhone as firmware 1.0.2. If the number is greater than 39 (40 and higher), it’s also almost certain that the firmware in iPhone will be 1.1.1 or newer, where you probably need to start arranging to return the phone if you’re not planning to use the phone on AT&T. Grey area is when the digits is 39, where the iPhone has equal chances to be 1.0.2 or 1.1.1.
How to Check iPhone Firmware Version (Field Test Mode)
Turn on the phone and slide to unlock the keypad. iPhone screen should show that only emergency calls is allowed.
Enter the following key sequence: *3001#12345#* and then finish by pressing Call button. This will enter field test mode of iPhone.
Tap on Versions.
The firmware revision information of iPhone installed out of the box will be shown on LCD screen. The following guide will match the firmware revision to the firmware version.
03.12.06_G – firmware version 1.0.0
03.14.08_G – firmware version 1.0.1 or 1.02
04.01.13_G – firmware version 1.1.1
04.02.04_G – firmware version 1.1.1
Hope this is helpful…
Does anyone know what week number the 1.1.4 started?
