Chinese mobile carrier China Unicom started taking pre-orders this week on the iPhone 5 for a December 14 launch. Reports indicate that the Chinese carrier racked up 100,000 pre-orders for the device the first day it was available.

New statistics from Kantar indicate that Apple has regained the top spot in the global smartphone market. Apple fell from the top spot last month as people stop buying the old version of the iPhone with the iPhone 5 set to launch. Kantar's stats show that the iPhone 5 is pushed Apple back to the top.

Another government agency has left the BlackBerry smartphone behind and is adopting the iPhone. The NTSB has confirmed that it is leaving BlackBerry smartphones behind in favor of the iPhone 5 after existing BlackBerry devices begin to fail "at an unacceptable rate."
