In a move seemingly to reduce the number of unlocked iPhones, AT&T has offered up some middle ground for those not wanting to get raped by international calling and data charges. There are two new plans, the top one tacks on $60 to your current bill and nets you 50MB of data per month, but that’s just the start of the benefits.

It works in 29 countries including Canada, Mexico, and then various other places throughout Eurasia. Here are the added benefits though, international voice and data roaming are enabled, and long distance dialing from the US are all the same price.

And should you be outside the US and use more than 50MB in a month, ATT will only charge you half a cent per kilobyte within the 29 countries, and should you step outside those countries boundaries at all, they will only charge you 1 cent per kilobyte. The other plan is only $25 a month, only allows for 20MB and ups that last price to 1.95 cents per kilobyte.

They have had the second plan (the $25 plan) since the beginning. It does require a minimum of a one year commitment. I love my iphone, but the international data plan doesn’t hold a candle to T-Mobile’s unlimited international data plan which is only $20 with no commitment. That plan you can activate for only a weekend if you’d like.
