Other than your usual SIM card unlock the only place to get an officially unlocked iPhone is through Hong Kong and parts of Europe. RussianiPhone.ru is currently claiming that they have managed to get their mitts on a pre-release of the upcoming iPhone firmware 2.2.1 beta. This update is rumored to hold the long awaited push notification service and synchronization for your notes.

The FCC released detail on a patent that Apple filed regarding a secondary backlight. The backlight would show status updates such as new email, text message or missed calls without having to turn the primary backlight on, thus saving battery life. As promised the iPhone Dev team has delivered the 2.2 firmware jailbreak in the form of the Pwnage tool and Quickpwn for both Mac and Windows machines. This update seems to be the real deal breaker in regards to future unlocks.
