We have a video of Steve answering this very question. Clearly I wasn’t the only one that was curious.
He doesn’t just give a simple answer why and then try and move on either, the video is actually worth a watch. The summary is that the battery life for a 3G iPhone just isn’t good enough right now.

Apple picked O2 as its UK carrier partner for the iPhone. During the Apple UK event today, Apple announced pricing of the iPhone, and it is 269 pounds. They will be available in time for Christmas by November 9th.

The price on the 8GB iPhone has been dropped a full $200 to $399. Better yet, the 4GB one has been dropped completely.

It has the full touchscreen controls. Took the interface from the iPhone and put it in an iPod.
It has the same multitouch interface as the iPhone too. There are even apps including calendar, clock, contacts, calc, settings, and more.

The new iPod has been renamed to the iPod Classic. It is thinner, and has a fully metal body.
The capacity goes up to 160GB which will hold 40,000 songs. This model will start at 80GB but is thinner than the 5th gen 30Gb. They are $249 and $349 respectively.
