iPhone 2.2 SDK offers up TV out functions

Looks like the latest iPhone 2.2 SDK has a few surprises built-in. For one, the updated MediaPlayer framework can make it possible to export live video to your TV. I know it sounds crazy, but it is totally possible, and we’ve posted a video to prove it.

MPTVOutWindow class makes it so your iPhone can transmit video straight from itself to a TV connected to it. So, instead of viewing videos on your iPhone screen, you can view them on your much larger TV screen. You will need to buy a video adapter or cable in order to make the proper hook up, however.

It seems you can also use the accelerometer for controller functions, as any screen touches are ignored when video is being sent out. While limited at the moment, this function seems to have potential and it will be interesting to see what developers do with it and whether or not it is expanded in future upgrades.

  1. I must be reading this wrong or something because I’ve been watching videos on my tv from my iPhone ever since I bought it about a year ago! Apple sells component cables that go from your iPhone/touch and into any tv with component inputs. So what’s the big deal here?

Yeah, that’s been around for a while… It showed up in the settings menu around firmware 1.1.1′s release for the 1st gen iPhone. Not news.

To the above readers, and anyone else wondering the same thing…
This article is about the SDK. Yes the iPhone has been able to output videos to tv-screen. BUT this was only possible through the Ipod function.
However NOW it seems developers will be able to use this aswell in their apps, and output images to the tv-screen.
