When the iPhone's specifications were announced, there were many who made comparisons - generally unfavourable - with it and many of the advanced handsets available in Japan, along with the prediction that, style notwithstanding, the relatively archaic connectivity would see it a commercial failure there. However, a recent survey by Mitsubishi Research Institute and Rakuten Research has found that a surprising 27.6-percent of Japanese mobile phone users would buy an iPhone if it were to become available in the country.

That figure breaks down into 5.2-percent "very willing" to spend their own money on the iPhone, and a further 22.4-percent "somewhat willing" to do so, out of 2,200 people questioned. 11.8-percent expressed willingness to switch providers should it be necessary in order to buy Apple's cellphone. In a country where advanced functionality such as electronic "cashless" wallets, ultra-high-speed mobile broadband and unbelievable levels of customisation are par for the course, it's impressive that the iPhone concept could make such an impact.
Apple is yet to make any announcements regarding the iPhone reaching the Japanese market.
