My iPhone is Hot! Literally Temperature Hot!

After coming home from AT&T store, I did an unboxing video of the iPhone. After that I plug it into the docking and connect it to iTunes. Activated my iPhone with AT&T and start calling people letting them know I got an iPhone.

hot iphone ewdi

I keep the phone plugged and sync my emails from a Macbook Pro. I went to the kitchen to make some snacks for movie night (it’s Friday!) and 20 minutes later Vincent calls, I picked up the phone call (it’s done syncing and ejected) and it feels hot, way beyond warm. I felt discomfort on my ear after talking to Vincent for less than a minute.

Is anyone else out there having the same heat issue as me? Please post it on comment if you do. I just hope I didn’t just get a DOA unit.

Update : It feels cooler now, a tad warm but nothing as hot as previously during the first sync.

I never had a over heating problem with my iPhone. My has worked great even after I ran over it with a 9,800lb truck by accident. The screen wasn’t cracked at all only the back is messed up. In fact I’m writing this from my iPhone right now.

Just had the same thing happen. As I always do, I plugged in my iPhone to the dock before going to bed, as I always do. The battery comes up on the screen, like it always does.

Woke up the next morning to pick up the phone, it was so hot, I dropped it immediately. Waited for it to cool down (about 30 minutes). Tried to reboot and nothing. Tried to charge it again, and nothing happened.

Took it to the Genius Bar at Apple. They pulled out the sim card. The phone had got so hot, it actually melted the SIM card inside.

They replaced it with a new one immediately, but there seems to be something wrong with some of these that’s causing this.

    Hi all,

Here’s my experience with the Iphone.

I bought mine over 6 months ago and had it cracked to 1.1.1. Everything worked great and loved the device. I was able to get 2+ days of stand by and about 7 hours Itunes usage without getting hot at all.

However, when I decided to upgrade to 1.1.3, I used the Independence method and worked (albiet 27 hours of mucking around). It worked fine. I then decided to upgrade to 1.1.4 using Ziphone since it looked to easy to do. Again the Iphone worked fine. This was about a month ago.

Then one day, I was watching a movie on the beach. I came home and eventually noticied 2 things: 1. Wi-Fi was greyed out; 2. excessive heat being generated from the Iphone.

At first, the greyed out Wi-Fi really concerned me as since I don’t have available / or trust the speeds of EDGE, I use Wi-Fi on a regular basis. Having googled for many solutions, I found out it was a common co-relation with excessive heat. At first, I tried downgrading the firmware back to 1.1.1 and then to 1.1.4. Yet no luck, My Iphone was starting to turn into an expensive paper weight. In the end, I didn’t want to return the Iphone to Apple, because unfortunately in Australia, Apple don’t sell/support the Iphone yet (as in time of writing).

I resigned to just having the phone feature and live without the Wi-Fi, so I did the unlock with Ziphone and have been using it since with only phone features. Until….

2 days ago, I checked my phone and viola! the Wi-Fi dialog box had “not connected” yippie!!!!!! that basically meant it was back to normal now. This has been confirmed with a Wi-Fi address.

But…. unfortunately, the heat problem still exists as I thought since the Wi-Fi was resolved, that it maybe the case too. Nope. Now I still have about 20 hours stand by and about 3 hours Itunes usage and also the uncomfortable heat. The same problem as when the Wi-Fi started disappearing.

Lesson learnt…. careful with the outdoor usage. The Iphone is not solar friendly.

  7. My problem with the iphone was the same i pluged the iphone up to the charger and i took it off and it burnt my hand and left a mark so i put it in a cloth so it could cool down but after 10 minutes it was still Super HOT the i checked it about 7 minutes later and it was still hot but no as hot as before and therefor i tryed to cut it on and it popped up with a box saying error and that the phone needs to be repaired the the screen started fuzzing up like a tv that has a bad signal then it shut off and want come back on even after i called the at&t store that told me to press the top shut of button and the home button at the same time for about 10 seconds to reset the phone and it still will not come on after about 50 trys

Its my 4th day using iPhone. I just made an adhoc connection on my laptop and started using wi-fi on iPhone. My phone started heating and it was hard enough to keep it in hands. I was downloading an application from built in installer. I was also texting from my phone and the usb cable was plugged in. I am still unable to figure out what happend to my phone. What caused my phone to heatup.
I powered off and after 5 mins now its normal.

  9. My iPhone is always hot to the touch after I use it for a few minutes. It doesn’t matter what feature I am using. Has this caused anyone to have a reliability problem?

  12. jack says:

I plugged my iPhone in the base
and when I got a message I went to unplug it and checked the messeage the phone got so hot and hot it shut off and wouldn’t come back on. After about 1/2 hour it cooled off but still wouldn’t come on.

  14. katie says:

I dont have a iPhone but I was listening to the radio today and the station was talking about problems with the iphone and the iPod nano. Well a guy called in about his iPhone and said that he was downloading apps and he was texting at the same time and that he felt it getting hot to the point to where he couldnt touch it, so he sat it down on the desk. Well he said that the silver back of the phone got to a cherry red, because it was that hot. i dont know if it’s true but all of the things i have heard about the iphone scare me and dont want one because of the problems with it. I am getting a Samsung impression instead. I love samsung phones.

  15. Mark says:

I plugged my iphone in around 4 in the morning hoping it would be fully by the time i woke up, i woke up around 8:30, and so i grabbed my iphone and the phone wass extremely hot. the thing that bothers me most about it other than it being extremely hot, was that my battery didnt charge.

  16. UnnameD987 says:

    Try with other sim card.

  17. Naven says:

This is a problem with pretty much all smart phones. The more energy you pull from the battery the hotter it will get. now that’s not to say that it should get so hot that it glows or burns you. I’m a network administrator / wireless coordinator and deal with many smartphones including blackberrys, iphones and various windows mobile devices. they all get hot when using wifi, GPS or extended calls. Multitasking will only make matters worse. Try turning WIFI and GPS off when you’re not using them. while the iphone has many great feautures, it’s not neccessarily designed to use them all at once.

  18. ashley says:

The same thing use to happen to my phone when i used the wall charger so then i started using the usb cable and then it started working normal…maybe you should get a wall charger and try charging it on their for a while.

  19. Nicnax says:

I got my iPhone yesterday and have been cramming it with apps. It has gotten hott too, but probably due to overuse. I don’t think the iPhone is meant for prolonged use? But how would I know, there’s no instructions!!!

  20. kaz says:

    Nicnax
totally agree about the instruction business.
But my phone was hot after talking to someone for less than 10 minutes!! I had the I-Phone G now have the next version and the older phone did not heat up like this one..

  21. Linda says:

I have had my i phone for 6 months and l love it butfor the first time today l went to put it on the charger and it was hot and l noticed it had turned of. so l waited about half an hour for it to cool down and then pressed the on/off button and the home button simultaneously for about ten seconds and it came back on. Hope this doesn’t happen again. I heard that it helps to turn the wifi off if not using it as this is supposed to help so l have done that.

  22. Max says:

Yeah I’ve got a iPhone 3gs, and it constantly gets hot. The reason for this is because it has a bigger CPU and RAM, and no fan to cool it, and to help with this, apple has integrated a thermometer and a emergency shutdown due to heat into the iPhone 3g and 3gs (less so on the 3g). The best way I’ve found to cool it and make it work is (I know it sounds weird, but) put it in the fridge for a couple of minutes (make
    sure
it’s off and not in any ice or liquid), or direct a fan or air conditioning right at the phone (putting the phone upside-down) I hope this helps. :)

  23. Fizz says:

    I had the same problem…

I checked the connection between the iPhone and the charger and there was foil there. That made it really hot, so I took it out again and it’s now working fine .

  24. ben says:

I have an iphone 3gs i have also had mine for about 6 months i know this because i’m in my 6th or 7th month of free internet with 02.Anyway i went out on friday night and went in to a pub before going clubbing.Got in to the pub it was working fine but after going to the bar i sat down got my i phone out and it swithced itself off and didn’t come back on until the next day it wasn’t hot or anything. But i’m just baffled as to what this could be. And worried this might happen again.

  25. George says:

On my 3rd phone the 1st 2 heated up but htese suggestions by apple seemed to have worked.

  26. jchoi says:

same issue with everyone that posted above…i had my iphone ( loved it until now ) for about one year now…..before going to bed i went on youtube on my wifi…then i plugged the phone into the charger and went to bed…

several hours later i was awoken by a sharp pain when i rolled over to see what time it was…something was hot! like Sizzling hot!…to my surprise it was my iphone…….it felt like it was about to explode or something…i quickly grabbed a nearby sock and used it as a oven mit to unplug my iphone…

Needless to say my iphone is pretty much useless now..it won’t turn on anymore…im waiting for them to send me a box, so they can do a swap and replace my iphone….not sure if i feel safe using it anymore tho.
