Loading ...After coming home from AT&T store, I did an unboxing video of the iPhone. After that I plug it into the docking and connect it to iTunes. Activated my iPhone with AT&T and start calling people letting them know I got an iPhone.
I keep the phone plugged and sync my emails from a Macbook Pro. I went to the kitchen to make some snacks for movie night (it’s Friday!) and 20 minutes later Vincent calls, I picked up the phone call (it’s done syncing and ejected) and it feels hot, way beyond warm. I felt discomfort on my ear after talking to Vincent for less than a minute.
Is anyone else out there having the same heat issue as me? Please post it on comment if you do. I just hope I didn’t just get a DOA unit.
Update : It feels cooler now, a tad warm but nothing as hot as previously during the first sync.

I’m getting mine activated shortly, so let me see if I can produce the same results.
Perhaps it’s the metal causing the increased heat when charging?
Does the iPhone used flash memory, or does it have a hard drive? If the latter, that’s probably the reason. My trusty old 2nd gen iPod sometimes got disconcertingly warm if plugged into the firewire port and the drive was being accessed.
Now that I think about it, a more likely possibility is the internal battery on the phone. If it’s anything like my iBook, the battery can get hottish when charging. Hopefully Apple isn’t using those Sony-style batteries that led to a massive recall last year due to fire hazards.
It definately gets hot after you have held it for awhile.
I don’t know if anyone else has noticed a problem with uploading photos from the iphone. The problem is is that you can do not do it. This is a major problem for me since I like to take photos and upload them to a web site from the cellphone. With my Windows mobile HTC cellphone it is very easy to do. But with the iPhone the control (on the web page) that you click on where you go find the file to upload is disabled. How in the world can they do this.
The PC based Safari browser works fine.
Maybe I’m overstating the problem but lets say you are on vacation and you take some photos (the iPhone camera is excellent) and you want to upload them to Costco to get them printed for later pick up. You can’t do it. The best I can tell is that you have to come home. Transfer the image files to your PC/Mac and then upload them from there.
Anybody else seen this problem.

i have yet to download a movie..i am disappointed it does NOT play games..i have several & i lost my vidpod recently..oh well, next adventure will provide that, i am sure!

i know all info prior to its appearance stated you could not send photos to other cell phones..i imagine this is part of the issue you are addressing…alo i believe i read you can not buy music from the fone..i am sure Steve will improve that soon!!

Mine got a little warm with the first sync, but not HOT. I do know that my 60 gig iPod gets quite toasty when I’ve been “burning up” the video content.
Thanks for the heads up, with my snug-fitting leather case, I’ll pay special attention for the next couple of days — I certainly don’t want to insulate any heat in!

Here is my ipohne scoop…Bought 2 at oppening.
1st purchased for my girl who is a Cingular/ATT customer. Her iPhone got activated that same evening.
1. The phone became warm enough during sync for me to get worried.
2. Speaker volume is extremely low. Ringtones, voice inaudible. Volume has been maximized.
3. She has service. We can make calls, but can’t hear very well. Very low speaker volume and yes, the volume control has been maximized.
2nd purchased for me, T-mobile customer. Took me 3 days to get activated, and I am still waiting for service.
1. Again The phone became warm enough during sync for me to get worried.
2. Speaker volume is ok on this one. riingtones are audible, still low.
3. I still don’t have service.
We contacted ATT about the delayed activation and service. ATT sent me to T-mobile and T-mobile sent me back. ATT claims they didn’t get the “PORT” information. T-mobile claims otherwise. I don’t know which company is lying…my money is on ATT.
Ok so now we are back to ATT. Finally spoke to someone, who has to take us through some routine tests. Did not help
Now, the rep has sent us to a queue for better support……but then we got kicked off the queue
Called back, same routine…back into the queue from hell.
Been at waiting for approx. 78 + mins…..and as of this writing…still waiting.

Dreaddy, I understand very well your frustration, fortuntaly what Vincent and i experience are very different because of an amazing staff in Denton AT&T store name Michael E. He went above and beyond normal at&t staff to help us get our iPhone to work. I think he should be promoted to manager at that place :)

Still no service…and yes, I am whining …I think I deserve to.
The 1st iPhoney needs to be replaced. Options are:
1. Go to a store and replace it. Problem is…no stock available.
2. Cingular/ATT exchange policy as outlined by a Rep: Buy ANOTHER iPhoney from them and ship my iPhoney in for a refund. Very tempting, but my credit card already took a massive hit from buying the two iPhoneys and the 1st + Activation for the second iPhoney. Additionally, I’m reading UNCONFIRMED stories about replacement being faulty also.
The 2nd iPhoney…sadly still no service. I’m activated. I can see the pretty icons, setup wi-fi, surf(very slow), download emails and blah blah but no service.
I’m positive I’ll have lots of good things to say about iPhoney as soon as ATT/Cingular slaps that last piece of duct tape over their problems.
As for Apple, I’ve never had to experience with their support…Let’s see how they do.
oh definitely, you’ve paid 600+ for a phone you should expect it to work. I think you should call apple and get it replace.
I’ve found if you wall charge then sync, the temperature is very reasonable.
I have had iphone since release and only a few conversations on it. Tonight, I talked for maybe 10 minutes and it was very hot on my ear…. like disturbingly hot. Even after conversation - I let roomate feel it with hand and the top half of it (ear section) was super hot…. whereas the bottom portion was not. That is just odd. It had not been on a charger or base for many hours prior to this - just for the record. It was very uncomfortable to continue the conversation and that is not cool.
I’m also experiencing the same. Checked with local apple retailer and was told they’ve had no reports of the heat issue. Of course they have not. They wouldn’t admit it even if they have. So we will wait and see what apple does in the next fee days or weeks.

Still no service on iPhoney #2, got confirmation of number transfer, did a re-sync.
Spoke to a rep who claimed not to be able to find my iPhoney activation in their system. Didn’t even know what package I signed up for thru itunes.
I have been in their system since day 2 complaining in each dept they transsferred me to. With all that, my rep. cannot find my activation information.
My god, it this the New ATT/

I did receive an email indicating that my phone (port) transfer was successful. Still no service.
Rep I spoke to this morn claimed that she could only find records indicating that I had called. No records of my activation, service or porting complaints from the past 2 days. Matter of fact she told me I should have received a case number which I did not.
So, either I”m lying or the case workers I spoke to over the last 2 days didn’t do squat. The time spent on the phone with ATT/Cingular didn’t really happen….just in my head and land line records phone records.
Note to self: Write down reps ID or name….never know when a support call will turn bad.
My girls phone needs to be replaced. Apple worked out locating available stock. A Service I would also expect from ATT/Cingular for a “luxury” phone purchase, or at the very least, for that 2 year hell of a marriage I”m bound to.

Had a client just call me to tell me his iPhone overheated from just carrying it in his pocket.
He pulled it out to make a call & in the middle of leaving a message the iPhone froze & wouldn’t let him end the call. He spent five minutes trying to figure out how to get the phone to hang up or perform a hard reboot. During this time he was still in this person’s voicemail. I’m sure there were a LOT of expletives in that message!

That is too funny. So how do you do a soft reset? I know the way to perform a hard reset it to hold the standby button and the home button together until the “apple” flickers.
He should look at his email settings. My iPhone wasn’t charged for about 30-minutes, but managed to drain about 18% of the battery just because it was trying to download emails. When something is caught in a loop or if iPhone can’t get a connection to ATT, it will sit there and spins.
An Apple Store Tech told me that by using the Wifi feature on the phone that it uses more of your battery life. He suggested that I use the EDGE for internet access. It is slower but will not use as much of the battery. Prior to his explanation my iPhone was getting extremely hot using the Wifi but once I switched to the EDGE Network my iPhone stayed a lot cooler resulting in longer battery life. Hope this helps everyone as it did for me!

true, but if you’re within the range of wifi - it’s faster to use it. then use EDGE when you’re not.
You are also true but the Wifi really burns the battery fast and drains it super fast. Once the EDGE is connected it isn’t all that bad. I found my battery lasting 10 times more by not accepting the Wifi signals. Try it!
It is the micro wave that get it hot. People are microwaving their ears while using iPhone.
Yes, my iPhone does get very hot. It could be a battery problem. I’m in the process of getting mine replaced (the whole phone, not just the batt). It has been a major hassle but Apple finally gave in and is getting a new one out to me. I found that if I turn the phone off and leave it off for a couple of minutes, the heat problem goes away.
Is there a way to mark all e-mail a “read” rather than having my old e-mails still showing up as if they are “new mail” on the home screen? I have hundreds from my mail server, and I don’t want to have to literally open each one of them…
Is there a way to do this? Every other e-mail program on the planet has this…but I can’t find it on the iphone.

I am also noticing a high level of heat. It is not Hot, but it is definitely above skin temperature….on the other hand I have haven’t let it out of my hot little hands yet either.
I have an iphone and from today me notice that if it is true that when this(this one) being loaded calinte almost on the point of esplotar, today is afraid muchisimo pense that me one was for damaging since I set it to load for approximately 2 hours and when the bareria returns to see it the color was crito (Red) and this one super warmly when I it saw almost crying, pense that esplotaria. have thought to change it I believe that these too warm ones are not not normal at all.
OK I purchased my iPhone two days ago - this sucker is HOT. It is an amazing device but when I talk on the phone within minutes my head/ear is burning up. I also noticed when using Wifi the battery goes to nothing in short order.
I hope the folks at Apple will come clean with this problem and fix it.

I just came home with my 3rd iPhone due to the battery issue. Totally understand your problem.
Well, I noticed the heat on my iphone too. After charging it on my car-charger, I didn’t realize how hot it got. It was so HOT that I dropped it on the cement! I’m going to Apple tomorrow and see what they can do. Amazingly, the phone still works.

All you need to do is take it into an Apple store if there’s one near you. If there isn’t check with Apple for alternative solutions. You shouldn’t have to buy a new one just to send the defective one back.
I noticed the phone gets hot when I have the wifi antena working. If I turn the wifi off it cools down fairly quickly.

just using standard edge results in a temp so hot I burned myself. I can get to do this by switching (very frequently) between weather, traffic, web, email, SMS, and stocks (I don’t have to make a call).

Bought my Iphone 8 days ago, last night I was on the web edge service “not too hot” my freaking Iphone shuts off and would not come back on. I tried charging it would not work with the USB port and the outlet was the only way to charge the phone, that did nothing all I got was the apple logo and thats it, the phone was not drained at all, just shut down completely. brought it back got a new one sim switch working fine will not update this at all.
ps am I the only person to have an Iphone break down on them so soon.
Hello, we are dealing with radio frequencies here, same as the microwaves which operate at 2,45 GHz. If the phone frequency is close to 2 GHz, it will get warm, at 2,45 GHz it will boil. This is my theory, at least. Radiofrequencies are not harmless.

What have you done about the phone - did the heat/hot improve? This is my 3rd phone. First one after a 20 minute call, I had to hang up - my ear was burning. It throbed for over an hour. Got a replacement and first call - could not hear. Today activated my 3rd phone which is a challenge for me and very time consuming, and again after a 20 minute call it is hot again, and tonight my ear is still bothering me. I handed the phone to my secretary and asked her if it seemed hot to her. I was beginning to think it was me. She could not believe it. So what do I do now. I have probably $825 invested in this thing.
Well I’ve had my phone for a week or two now and it just happened to me where it felt hot to were I was concerned. Which is when I found this page! Seems like it just gets hot when being ‘over used’… I was going back and forth between apps and web browsing (while on WiFi) and had it back in my pocket when I really did feel it. Held it in my hand and was rather hot. Could be the battery along with the processor or whatever makes it run and doesn’t get the ventilation it needs while in the pocket. Around 5 mins and it had cooled down no worries.
I don’t have an iphone but I just noticed my Nextel Motorola ic502 was hot when I picked it up out of my purse. I think it must be something to do with the wiring. It is worth investigating.
I charged my iPhone last night, it have been using it normally for 3 weeks now, It is UNModifed, I mean is 100% clean and legal so no 3rd party apps or unlocks. Sol last night after 4 hours of charging it I noticed that the phone was turned off. So I pick it up to turn it on and it was EXTREMELY HOT!, Almost to the point of not being able to hold it in my hand for more than 1 min. I try to turn it on and nothing happens, I try to reset, NOTHING… My iPhone is dead…
So I will take it to the Apple Store and see what happens…

Mine is the same. This is my 2nd iPhone. This thing really turns so hot - even when it is not being charged. After that - you will notice that the battery is getting drained (not even doing anything). I don’t surf much - but I would notice that everytime it turns hot - the battery won’t even last for 1 day standby.
I have an apppointment with Apple today at 1:30. We’ll see.
Went to the apple Store… they just gave me a NEW Phone. Just Like That.
My iPhone also gets hot at times, but one thing I’ve noticed is that both times when it gets hot is after it’s been exposed to sunlight for about 5 minutes straight. The battery also seems to be running out quicker when the phone is in “heated mode”!!

I conducted a small experiment with my iPhone to figure this overheating issue and (at least with my phone) it is seems to be tied to wifi. Here’s how I got there: At work there are wifi networks that my phone cannot connect to. They are unprotected, but are networks that are either too weak or do not have DHCP enabled. So if I am charging/syncing at work and wifi is enabled, my phone is working overtime (getting hot) trying to connect to these invalid networks. Additionally, the phone has an incredibly hard time charging the battery because all of the resources are being used to power the wifi signal which is constantly looping. To remedy, I turn off wifi at work and phone returns back to it’s default temperature and battery charges as expected. To test this further, at home I connect to my personal wifi network while charging/syncing and phone remains at a constant cool state (for hours).
So, for me at least, my phones temperature increased due to it’s inability to successfully connect to wifi networks. Hope this helps.
My wife is on her 3rd iphone now. the first to over heated and died. it happened both times at work while she was trying ot recharge it. she was able ot recharge at home fine.
She was using an old firewire charge cable/ac adapter from an old ipod. i though perhaps th efire wire charger was an issue but it always seemd to charge fine. Has anyone else seen tis with old ipod chargers or are they supposed to work? the connectors look the same and the iphone seems to take it fine unless she takes it to work….but we are scared to try that one again.
But the wifi/charging combo effect could be the culprit. She leaves the wifi on and i am sure it cannot connect to her work wifi. is this work overheating JUST when you are charging? thats the only time hers heats.

I never had a over heating problem with my iPhone. My has worked great even after I ran over it with a 9,800lb truck by accident. The screen wasn’t cracked at all only the back is messed up. In fact I’m writing this from my iPhone right now.
Just had the same thing happen. As I always do, I plugged in my iPhone to the dock before going to bed, as I always do. The battery comes up on the screen, like it always does.
Woke up the next morning to pick up the phone, it was so hot, I dropped it immediately. Waited for it to cool down (about 30 minutes). Tried to reboot and nothing. Tried to charge it again, and nothing happened.
Took it to the Genius Bar at Apple. They pulled out the sim card. The phone had got so hot, it actually melted the SIM card inside.
They replaced it with a new one immediately, but there seems to be something wrong with some of these that’s causing this.
ok well my phone all of a sudden stoped working and i tired plugging it in for a while thinking that had something to do with it, and when i pikedc the phone up it was so hot i couldent hold it i think it was on the verge of catching on fire!!!! It also smelt like burning plastic i think it totally fried!!!?? Im sad now i loved my phone!!!
ok my phone too is overheating too so was my nokia but that was no biggie apparently it does indeed had something to do with the wifi connection but heres also another catch apparently my whole house is wifi enabled 3 routers in fact when i get connected to my third floor router its actually getting that cool temperature for unknown reasons… and for me to cool it down… in a weird way i use my cooled down skin <_< its cool than it should be due to sweat and all

Here’s my experience with the Iphone.
I bought mine over 6 months ago and had it cracked to 1.1.1. Everything worked great and loved the device. I was able to get 2+ days of stand by and about 7 hours Itunes usage without getting hot at all.
However, when I decided to upgrade to 1.1.3, I used the Independence method and worked (albiet 27 hours of mucking around). It worked fine. I then decided to upgrade to 1.1.4 using Ziphone since it looked to easy to do. Again the Iphone worked fine. This was about a month ago.
Then one day, I was watching a movie on the beach. I came home and eventually noticied 2 things: 1. Wi-Fi was greyed out; 2. excessive heat being generated from the Iphone.
At first, the greyed out Wi-Fi really concerned me as since I don’t have available / or trust the speeds of EDGE, I use Wi-Fi on a regular basis. Having googled for many solutions, I found out it was a common co-relation with excessive heat. At first, I tried downgrading the firmware back to 1.1.1 and then to 1.1.4. Yet no luck, My Iphone was starting to turn into an expensive paper weight. In the end, I didn’t want to return the Iphone to Apple, because unfortunately in Australia, Apple don’t sell/support the Iphone yet (as in time of writing).
I resigned to just having the phone feature and live without the Wi-Fi, so I did the unlock with Ziphone and have been using it since with only phone features. Until….
2 days ago, I checked my phone and viola! the Wi-Fi dialog box had “not connected” yippie!!!!!! that basically meant it was back to normal now. This has been confirmed with a Wi-Fi address.
But…. unfortunately, the heat problem still exists as I thought since the Wi-Fi was resolved, that it maybe the case too. Nope. Now I still have about 20 hours stand by and about 3 hours Itunes usage and also the uncomfortable heat. The same problem as when the Wi-Fi started disappearing.
Lesson learnt…. careful with the outdoor usage. The Iphone is not solar friendly.
My problem with the iphone was the same i pluged the iphone up to the charger and i took it off and it burnt my hand and left a mark so i put it in a cloth so it could cool down but after 10 minutes it was still Super HOT the i checked it about 7 minutes later and it was still hot but no as hot as before and therefor i tryed to cut it on and it popped up with a box saying error and that the phone needs to be repaired the the screen started fuzzing up like a tv that has a bad signal then it shut off and want come back on even after i called the at&t store that told me to press the top shut of button and the home button at the same time for about 10 seconds to reset the phone and it still will not come on after about 50 trys
Its my 4th day using iPhone. I just made an adhoc connection on my laptop and started using wi-fi on iPhone. My phone started heating and it was hard enough to keep it in hands. I was downloading an application from built in installer. I was also texting from my phone and the usb cable was plugged in. I am still unable to figure out what happend to my phone. What caused my phone to heatup.
I powered off and after 5 mins now its normal.
