Independent test shows the iPhone’s battery isn’t up to snuff

The iPhone has only been out a few short days, but one website has already come forth and called shenanigans on Apple for the phone's poor battery life.

iPhone battery

According to an article over at WirelessInfo, they only managed to get a hair over 4 hours of talk time and a little over 3 hours of web browsing out of their iPhone. They haven't yet completed their test for battery life while playing music, but already the numbers are falling very short of what Apple promised.

I don't like calling shenanigans myself, but something really doesn't add up here. First, none of the early reviewers mentioned that the battery life was this bad. Second, the article was published on June 29, the same day the iPhone came out. I may not be the best at math, but if the phone came out at 6PM and they got 4 hours of talk time and 3 hours of web browsing, it would have been 1AM before they completed the tests, not to mention the time it would take to charge the phone between tests. Granted, they could have been using two separate phones for the test, which would make it possible, however, they would still likely be cutting it close.

We haven't heard any other reports of users complaining about poor battery life just yet, so hopefully their results were just a fluke. We are putting our own iPhones to the test, so check back for our own independent results.

  1. Chris, this is Richard Baguley, the editor of wirelessinfo.com. Our review was published on friday, but we have been updating through the weekend with results such as this; these results were not added until Sunday. The result you mention was from our first set of battery tests; we are running more to further examine this. Also, as we mentioned in the review, we test with default settings, which leaves the WiFi on. Apple’s battery life was obtained by turning the WiFi off, and we are running more tests as I type with several different sets of settings to obtain more data.

Yesterday I had the second full charge on my phone, and my experiences was, 1 hour of calls, 10 txt messages, 2.5 hours of WiFi internet, 5 emails total (sent/received).

When I got home at 6pm, I still had about 50% of my battery left. I wanted to get the battery down just once, so at 8pm I got on and watched more youtube, online apple trailers, a couple emails and a couple text messages. The battery lasted me until 10pm before I got my 10% battery left message. I sent a few text messages after that, and got it back on a charger at 10:50pm.

So I got a good 4.5 hrs of internet/video use plus 1 hour of talk time. Way more than I would ever do on a normal day, and so far exceeding my HTC S620 that I was using prior. There is NO comparison. I was lucky to get 16 hours of idle push email service with that.

I’m starting a brand new cycle today with a full charge to make but my experience with the iPhone’s battery have not been favorable either. I wont run our results until I am absolutely see, but at this point it doesnt look too good.

Anyways, one reason I think the battery is dying much faster of because I’m using exchange push by Microsoft. Is anyone else using the same?

I cannot wait for this Product to come to the UK, I have 2 phones both with varying PDA functions wished they were both merged into one, life will be a lot easier and because I travel on the the train a lot I do have my music on the go (Ipod). I have often wondered what life would be like if carried just one device that allowed me to make calls, organise my schedules and documents and surf the web. I just hope the Battery Life is better than what we got on the Ipods and comes without the £50.00 bbattery replacement charge they currently ask for.
I wonder how long we will have to wait for and no doubt we will be paying double the price……our friends across the pond are so lucky.

I know how you feel, our editor Chris Davies is in Manchester – I can’t wait to get him one!
