Will Apple play nice with Microsoft over doubleshot casing patent?

by Vincent Nguyen on March 2, 2007

The Cupertino-based iPod-maker, Apple was granted United States Patent Application #20070048470, filed back on August 16, 2005, “Housing of an electronic device formed by doubleshot injection molding.”  I highly doubt Apple will sit back and give Microsoft a free pass on this – since their Zune casing use the same casing technique. If you recall the original iPod, with the clear over white, then later clear over black among other colors, ... continued »

Apple files patent for “Cover Flow”

by Chris Scott Barr on February 27, 2007

Apple has filed a new trademark application for “Cover Flow”. This covers “computer software for browsing the contents of a library of music or video files.” This would seem to cover the iTunes music store, as they submitted a screenshot of the iTunes download page as “proof of commerce”. This trademark was first used in commerce as early as September 12 of last year, and is still currently being used. The application ... continued »

Apple could be in for another lawsuit over the iPhone

by Chris Scott Barr on February 20, 2007

This is not turning out to be a good year for the Apple legal department. They're currently battling Cisco over the right to use the iPhone name. Quantum Research also filed suit against them earlier this year stating that the iPod click wheels infringe on one of their patents. From the looks of things, another one may be on the way. continued »

Another teasing patent: inductive docks

iPhone’s Proximity Sensor Resembles Sony Ericsson’s Patent - #7085590

by Vincent Nguyen on February 7, 2007

It’s hard to say whether Apple is facing another lawsuit this early in the game since we know very little about the iPhone’s screen technology. On the surface, it seems as though Apple may have infringed on Sony Ericsson’s paten filed on May 1, 2004 and issued on August 1, 2006. The similarities between the two consist of automatic screen rotation, so that while in landscape mode the iPhone can ... continued »

Dear FCC, With love, From Apple

by Vincent Nguyen on February 6, 2007

A letter sent to the FCC from Apple back on October 12tth 2006 has surfaced. Apple requested for numerous documents related to the iPhone to remain confidential. Great find LoopRumors [via World of Apple]! “…the public disclosure of the above mentioned documents might be harmful to [Apple] and would give a competitor an unfair advantage in the market.” The letter insists that details should ideally be kept confidential until June ... continued »

Downloading via iTunes made easy on iPhone

by Chris Scott Barr on February 1, 2007

A patent that has been discovered today shows that Apple is working hard to ensure you'll have no problem spending shopping on iTunes. The patent describes the method of "Configuring of a computing device in a secure manner." It basically means that your phone will perform "transactions" with Apple's servers by first going through what appears to be the user's computer, which then talks to Apple's servers. The server then ... continued »
