Hands On with iPhone 2.0 – new changes abound like Spring cleaning

Engadget has gotten their hands on iPhone firmware version 2.0. Some of the new features include a scientific calculator when you turn your iPhone sideways with the calculator open and the previously announced Exchange support is as smooth as it should be.

There isn’t a contacts search function, although they proposed that it might be because they don’t have too terribly many contacts, so it might require a contact least of more length for that feature to kick in. There is also no two pane mail client (mail list in one, message in the other).

The app store was there though, even though all it did was error code out saying that it couldn’t connect. There were also a couple of button icon changes, including the calculator button and the iTunes Store button. Other than that, nothing really important to see here, I’m just really, really hoping that Firmware 2.0 lands on Hardware 2.0 with a new shiny 3G chipset, I know other users are pushing for a whole list of other new hardware features, and those would be nice, but just a new 3G chipset would make me happy.

Where is the You Tube Button? I was wondering why it looked different.

  2. that’s something i forgot to add to the article, there are also new parental controls in case someone is worried about the affect YouTube videos will have on their kids more than the effect giving your kid a $400 phone will have

so engadget was playing around with the Parental Controls and removed YouTube using them.

it doesnt really remove it, it just hides it, but you get the idea

    Oh, thats pretty cool.

What I want to know is..

1/. All these sites are testing v1.2 of the software but referring to it as v2.0 – are there going to be real changes between these two?

2/. Who cares about all the new features – where is copy/paste?

The conference in June. Do you think we will see a firmware update for the Iphone or a complete new 2nd Gen phone. I would like to purchase an Iphone, but don’t want to get one if a new phone will be out in June.

i sure hope Apple is releasing a new iPhone 2.0 with 3g! I think Apple is downplaying the copy and paste – and will add it as “oh by the way, you can now copy and paste kinda deal”

you make an interesting point – mrp as to why the test firmware is 1.2 yet even Apple is calling it iPhone 2.0. Anyone privy to the info know?

  7. Sidetalker says:

Apple is referring to the new software as 2.0 mainly to hype it up. Technically it can’t make the jump from 1.1.x to 2.0.0, but the actual name of it is clearly up to jobs and you have to admit 2.0 sounds much more impressive than 1.2.0. The names are fairly interchangeable as now (because the beta firmware people are getting their hands on is listed as 1.2.0 in the info section on the iPhone and apple has been calling it 2.0)… When it is released in June people will call it what apple releases it as. Hope that clears some things up :)

All I want is picture messaging!! – Why do they skip the things that should have come standard and move straight to the complicated stuff!

  9. No kidding – Cloe! MMS is pretty important and it really sucks the iPhone doesn’t support it.

i`m confused, i live and work in the uk and have been reliant on blackberry for several years,i have an unlocked iphone and forward mail to my mac account to retrieve it, under the new 2.0 software it talks about exchange sync etc but how will it actually get the mail in the first place, is it still going to be edge or wifi dependant or is push email going to use gsm/gprs noteven sure if the iphone has grps or if thats another name for edge, all i know is its very slow to send and recieve and bloody expensive.

Lastly, if the anwser is mainly no, does that mean i am going to have to splash out for a 3g version of the phone or just give up and go back to blackberrys.

    many thanks

  11. Hey Marc,

Exchange will work over edge and it will support PUSH email, in fact, the funny thing is that reports indicate that the PUSH email works really fast over EDGE and actually slows down when you connect via WiFI

    so stick with the iPhone

The question of why the touted “advanced” iphone still does not include such a most basic feature as MMS enhanced picture or lets not go on the deep end and say “video” text messaging, boggles my mind. Such a piece of hardware which has enhanced abilities which does not include such a basic feature I can find on a the cheapest phone from ATAT is by far the sadest thing I have found about the iphone. It has all the high end features you could love but it’s like a rich guy who doesn’t have the ability to brush his teeth; I mean this is a basic feature here, and the iphone doesnt’ have it… what was APPLE thinking. I mean, I know I’m not the only one thinking this. I’ve asked several iphone users this question and they too have stated that this issue bothers them. Your take??

  14. Ewan says:

My Take, the iphone sucks, bigtime!!

  15. Finicky article, finicky web site, I give rise to book-marked your blog, it truly is valuable responsibility that. Thanks.

If you spend enough time examining match ups, considering stats, and looking through various ideologies, you will finish up creating huge strides, but if you just randomly choose, you are going to lose much more often then you win.
