iPhone might run 3rd party apps!

July 18th, 2007 No Comments »

After downloading the complete iPhone UI Images from modmyiphone.com, I was looking through the images, and I saw two, not one, but two signs that Apple will let 3rd-party apps run on everyone’s favorite new toy. The standard application icon, used in Mac OS X, is included with the iPhone. This image also has a black background… to be displayed on the home screen, unless, of course, the developer uses a custom icon.  Even though the widgets on iPhone are actually “.app”s, they still behave like widgets. I’m guessing Apple will allow custom widgets to be written for iPhone, using the above image if the widget has no defined icon.  I guess we’ll see whether or not Apple implements 3rd party apps on the iPhone. But from looking at these icons, I think that with time, Apple will open up iPhone and make use of these icons.

Partially Unlocked iPhone

July 18th, 2007 No Comments »

“This is probably the biggest announcement regarding the iPhone: it has
been partially unlocked. Yes, you heard right. The people over at
iPhoneDevWiki.com have released a new tool called “iASign” which allows
you to use any SIM card with your iPhone, including Go Phone SIM, and
other SIM cards from AT&T.

If you use a PC, then you are temporarily out of luck; for the iASign
app currently runs on Mac OS X. The developers said they are working on
a Windows version and a way to completely unlock the iPhone.”

Warning

* We felt we had to say something before you performed this modification. There is obviously some risk involved here, but everyone we know of has been able to restore their iPhone by using iTunes. I’ve heard no report of anyone damaging their iPhone by doing this. However, if your iPhone becomes unresponsive to restoration via iTunes, then you may have to seek repair or replacement through Apple Inc., or AT&T. Pay careful attention to the instructions here. We are NOT responsible for your results. You are assuming all risks. These instructions were completed successfully by many people before being posted here, but we cannot account for everyone’s individual computer system configurations or ability to follow directions.

* It is unknown what, if any, effect future updates to iTunes or iPhone software and firmware will have on the modifications we are able to do.

[iPhone Buzz]  This is the best “how to” add custom ringtones - hands down!

“A company that unlocks cell phones in Europe said it is close to having an application that will allow customers to unlock their Apple iPhones so they can use SIM cards from carriers other than AT&T to activate the phones,” Elizabeth Montalbano reports for IDG News Service.

“In an interview this week in New York, John McLaughlin, founder of Belfast, U.K.-based Uniquephones, said he has engineers working around the clock in several countries who are close to cracking the complex security system Apple has set up to ensure customers can only use iPhones with AT&T Wireless service,” Montalbano reports.
