AT&T says no iPhone 3G tethering

The iPhone 3G is twice as fast as the first-gen iPhone, yet only half the price.  You’re probably wondering if you’ll be able to tether the iPhone 3G (tethering: using it as a cellular modem for laptops – a service AT&T and other carriers offer for many phones on the market) to your laptop.  The short answer is no.  The long answer is no.  Is it AT&T’s fault or Apple’s?  According to AT&T, the ball is in Apple’s court.

Jobs would have showed off the feature during the keynote at WWDC 2008, but he didn’t.  That doesn’t mean it’s not possible.  So should Apple flip the switch to enable tethering on the iPhone 3G, it’s possible AT&T will find a way to charge extra for the option whether you plan on using it or not.  It’s a little too early to worry about that right now.

However according to AT&T spokesman, Mark A. Siegel, who spoke with iPhone Atlas earlier this week, AT&T will not be supporting a PAM plan for the iPhone 3G. The only available data plan for the iPhone will be the new $30 consumer unlimited data and visual voice mail plan and the $45 business data plan. The latter is charged when a person makes an enterprise type connection to Exchange or a Blackberry server for email or messaging. – iPhone Atlas

Not that it’s such a big deal because the web capabilities are so good on the iPhone but my old Sony Ericsson was able to do it just fine. I had used it a few times as a last resort. I even had the same plan as I currently do. The EDGE speeds weren’t even that terrible. I think it’s probably a little of both their faults.

Wait it has to be able to b/c you can use it with the sdk to make 3rd party apps. I watched them do so with the new sdk 2.0 keynote earlier this year.
