3G iPhone has mounting evidence for its upcoming release

Evidence for a 3G iPhone is mounting at an alarming rate. First there is the next iPhone firmware which won’t be released until the WWDC, which supports the idea that there is likely to be a new version of the iPhone hardware released to coincide with the new firmware.

Then there is the reports of 10 million new 3G handsets being ordered for sale this year alone, a contract won by Hon Hai in Taiwan. Then Bank of America, a company whose predictions regarding the iPhone have all come true so far, predicted a Q2 release of the 3G iPhone.

Add to all of that the fact that Apple won the right to use the trademarked “iPhone” name in Japan, a land where there are no EDGE networks, only tons and tons of 3rd and 4th generation networks and the 3G iPhone is shaping up to be an almost guaranteed product of the summer of 2008. Predictions for an actual 3G iPhone release range from Early May in Spain to sometime in the second quarter which ends in September, so that’s a pretty broad range, but me, myself, and I are banking on the WWDC in June.

FYI, the second quarter ends in June, not September.

    evergreen,

does the term SOL mean anything to you? the change from EDGE to UMTS or HSPDA (3G) is a hardware change, not something in the firmware. being the “first” has it’s disadvantages.

personally, 3g with enterprise abilities is going to make the iphone sales explode!

    evergreen,
you sell or give your iphone to your family member or friend for half of what you paid for it and suck it up and buy a 3g. then, in 6 months when they release a cooler, different iphone, you do it all again. just like you do with all of your apple gear

  5. Fred says:

Is it a mystery or surprise that an iPhone that taps 3G is coming?

    Sheesh.

Get a life people with real concerns. It’s just another electronic gadget.

I’m not sure where the “OMG Why is Apple screwing me!?!” and the de rigueur, “Thats cuz Apple sucks” accompaniment comes from everytime the idea of a new iPhone comes up anywhere. Before you bought an iPhone what did you do with you cellphone when a new version of it came out six months later? The iPhone is going to have a shorter life cycle than an iPod or a computer – that’s the nature of the cellphone business. Blackberry, Motorola, Nokia, etc, don’t give out coupons to people who bought last years phone when it is replaced…and neither will apple.

  7. I’m not sure how everyone feels about this but – I definitely got my $500′s worth out of the first-gen iPhone. Ewdison and I are ready to drop another $500 for the 3G-capable 2nd-gen iPhone. Who’s with me on this?

  8. i am whole heartedly with you on that, i’ve already started saving up so that as soon as that thing drops i can be in line with cash in hand to buy one

definitely will pick up a 3G iPhone. Maybe not immediately – depends on price – but within a year I will upgrade from my existing one. I have no beef with Apple about a new version of the product being released. That’s just the nature of progress. The advantage to anyone who may not be ready to fork out extra cash just yet us that in a year from now when you are ready, the product line could possibly include the 3G version with a bigger storage capacity than what you’ll see this year. Its all good.
