Vincent was lucky enough to score some hands-on time with the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 in Barcelona this morning, and of course being our resident iPhone addict had his trusty Apple cellphone to slap down and snap some comparison shots. But how does the X1 really compare against the iPhone; it’s the comparison many will be making over the coming months.

In terms of pure hardware and cellular connectivity, the X1 does rather outshine the iPhone. Sony Ericsson have packed an ARM-based Qualcomm chipset running at 520MHz into their handset; now while Apple chose a CPU capable of 667MHz, so far it’s throttled back to around 500MHz to save power. If they’re roughly equal on raw grunt, it’s high-speed data access where the XPERIA X1 shines: both have WiFI, but the Sony Ericsson’s HSDPA/HSUPA easily outguns the iPhone’s EDGE connection. The X1′s WVGA 800 x 480 display is physically smaller, at 3-inches, than the iPhone’s 3.5-inch screen, but the Apple phone only manages 320 x 480 resolution.
Apple do beat the X1 on internal memory, though; out of the box the XPERIA only has 400MB, expanded via microSD card, whereas the iPhone is available in 8GB or 16GB sizes (though the memory cannot be added to via a memory card). GPS on the X1 is another point in Sony Ericsson’s favour, as is the hardware keyboard (although it does make the XPERIA 5mm thicker than the iPhone: 110 x 53 x 16.7mm for the X1, 115 x 61 x 11.6mm for the iPhone.
What will likely make the biggest difference is the software environment. Time – and sales – have shown that Apple’s intuitive and attractive mobile OS X is enough to persuade users to look beyond the shortcomings of EDGE; it’s a reputation for usability Windows Mobile would love to have. Sony Ericsson are obviously hoping that their XPERIA Panel Interface – a group of finger-friendly shortcut tiles and menus – will gloss over WM’s shortcomings, leaving us to revel in all those third-party apps (that don’t require handset hacking to install) and true push-email, but we’ll have to wait for Vincent’s hands-on video to see just how much they’ve achieved that.
It’s easy to say the SE handset outshines the iPhone in terms of hardware and cellular connectivity, but I’ll bet that with all that stuff thrown in there, the battery life is atrocious. Apple’s brilliance is often in what they choose not to include. While everyone else is obsessed with bullet-points on a feature list, Apple is obsessed with user experience, and the battery life of the iPhone is refreshingly superb.
I was initially suggested to wait for the X1 when I was talking to a store clerk and saying that the P1 was a style downgrade from the M600 (which it is… brushed metal? Eww… even Apple realised that brushed metal sucks! And switching that nice teal backlighting to red and white? Simple awful.)
But sadly on investigation I discovered that the X1 runs Windows, which means it isn’t an option for anyone boycotting Microsoft, but also it means that it isn’t actually a successor to the P1 in the first place, simply the first of a new line of phones which more resemble Nokia’s Communicator series.
Presumably a real successor to the P1 will show up at some point in the future, until then the choice I have to make is, buy the P1 now, import an iPhone now, or wait until the iPhone comes to here, which may be some time after Apple add back in 3G support…
Honestly the phone market shits me. Companies make 50 different styles of phone and only two of them are ever any good. And then when the technology in the previously good phones starts to become old, instead of just updating the technology in the same design, they make a new range of phones which look worse. How is it that the Sony Ericsson T610 is still the best looking candy bar phone even after several years? Are these designers even earning their wages?
Personally I hope that the open phone platform movement which is just starting will show some solutions to this problem. Maybe eventually when our phone dies we’ll be able to keep the same case design and upgrade the part which needs upgrading.
Boycotting Microsoft? Get over yourself already. Microsoft may be a bit monopolistic (though not in the cell phone industry anyway), but you still have to give them credit for the good products they come up with. Im sure anyone can come up with complaints about Windows or Office, but they’re really quite good, and the standard in todays business world.
Apple on the other hand, does come up with some innovative products, but once you get past that intial cool factor, you discover a lot of Microsoft style binding tactics. Products like the iPod and iPhone force you to use Apple software and services. For exmaple, songs from iTunes wont work with other devices or even Windows media player, and iTunes wont play Windows media formats. Maybe a marketing strategy by Apple, but I dont think their war with Microsoft should be fought at the expense of consumers like this. The same thing goes with 3rd party applications. Apple is doing its best to block them, yet making little effort to provide anything else. How much has the iPod changed? Its gotten smaller, bigger screen, more memory,even plays videos, but other than that its udderly the same as the original. Where things as simple as a radio feature on a music player doesnt even seem to come into consideration. Its a complete lack of innovation if anything, and the iPod touch is no better (since its just the iPhone – the phone).
My view is, if Microsoft wants to make something to compete with it, I welcome that. Its just business, to see a good idea, and capitalize on it. Competition also reduces prices and makes it better for consumers. Demonize Microsoft all you want, but they seem to be doing alright financially, and thats whats important to their stock holders who they are responsible to. Maybe their phone will be better, maybe it wont. But im at least going to give it a chance. If anyone insists on using inferior products simply because they object to Microsoft doing what it was meant to as a corporation, your only hurting yourself, so dont complain about everything.
