What if the Apple iPhone is the first step towards a MacPad?

I’m convinced that the Apple iPhone is the first piece of the puzzle to Apple’s master plan to rule the world of mobility. Apple’s offering already include Apple TV for your living room, Mac Pro, Macbook Pro, Macbook, iPods and now the Apple iPhone. The only market that Apple’s not in is the UMPC. Worry not my fellow Apple fans, because it’s only a matter of time.

Looking over the iPhone’s BoM, it’s got the hardware for a MacPad in the making. Like the iPhone, the MacPad will also sport OS X. However, Jason of Gizmodo believes that Apple will not enter the UMPC market because it’s too new and not many people are aware of UMPCs yet. Jason goes on to say that Apple enters markets others have already developed and refine current products. What do you think about this?

Absolutely agree. Apple will enter this market when they have a leapfrog/pace setting product and it is clear that the iPhone signals that they have the technology and UI to allow this. I believe/hope that it will be this year given that Jobs always has things he denies on the drawing board. Since he doesn’t need FCC permission, the announcement will come immediately before release.

I have said this before in a Mac rumor site.

You will be VERY SURPRISED with the next iteration of the iMac.
Steve Jobs wasn’t kidding when he spoke about the next 30 years…
Something BIG is coming your way…

Apple will invent a new interface that is appropriate for a smaller screen….

It will be a full install of mac os X, but how you install software and interact with the file system will be different… ie. they will re-do the finder and create a new standard .

Umm… is it just me, or isn’t the iPhone already a PDA/handheld computer? It’s got an integrated, self-contained keyboard, OS X, internet surgind, email, etc…. All Apple has to do to make it more “computer-ish” is to increase the ROM (maybe even RAM) and POOF! instant computer.

Heck, I want the iPhone BECAUSE it’s more of a PDA than a cell phone. It’s incredible.

But what those of us who don’t need or want a phone and yet are forced to have a phone plan or else not have access to the iPhone?

  6. yep, according to Cingular, no service plan – no Apple iPhone :(

  7. Sam Targile says:

    Absolutely!

The medical field has already been identified by Apple and there are many other vertical markets that Apple with OS-X can dominate. Media morons are soooo myopic it makes you wonder what they would do if they weren’t spoon fed FUD all day. Certainly investigative analysis would be extraordinarily rare.

    What about the markets for:
    Slate Tablets
    Convertible Tablets
Media Centers/Tivos/DVRs (Apple TV won’t record)
    Industrial/Ruggedized devices
    Embedded Devices
    Electronic Billboards

It seems Apple has a few more markets that they’re not playing in.

    Mark

  9. Mark, I dont count the markets you listed as mainstream consumer electronics.

New Tablet Mac (w. multi-touch screen) also an iPhone monitor.

How about a new tablet Mac with a multi-touch screen? I know, this is not a new Apple rumor. The twist is letting this new Mac link up with the iPhone. This is not just a synch, but an actual link (wireless or tethered) such that the tablet Mac can act as a monitor for iPhone. But it’s more than just a monitor (when it this mode), it is a “hands on” monitor with UI that can be identical to the iPhone, but on a much larger screen. No problem with an undersized keyboard now.

I think it would be a great synergy between two new products! Your cool new Tablet Mac has Leopard X.5, does everything and features a full size multi-touch viewscreen. And wow! The Tablet Mac can be linked to the IPhone and also act as a monitor with an identical “hands on” interface to the iPhone!
