Should Apple worry the iPhone does not immediately “WOW” Walt Mossberg?

walt mossbergCome on Walt, do you like the iPhone or not? You’re the first person on the planet to get the iPhone and the first thing you say is:

I don’t know whether I’ll give it a good review or not…I can already see some things I don’t like about it. I see some other things that I do like a lot about it.

What about all the other cool features like the accelerometer making the iPhone automatically rotate from portrait to landscape, cover flow, visual voicemail or even watching videos on the super large screen? You didn’t comment on how it feels or its drool-worthy sexiness.

I personally think you need to get pass the fact that the iPhone does not and will never have a physical keyboard. Physical keyboards are so yesterday. The iPhone’s touch-screen keypad is the way of the future.

We do see eye to eye on one thing – the iPhone is the next level of cellphones and yes it rocks that a real engine (hardware and software) is powering this bad boy.

Walt, I look forward to reading your review of the iPhone.

By the way, one thing you need to answer for me (actually more for Scobleizer):

Will it allow Flash to load? Walt Mossberg just got an iPhone. I wonder what happens when he goes to Google’s Finance site? Does the chart show up? -Robert Scoble

What Uncle Walt didn’t say is that he probably had to sign an NDA (non-disclosure agreement) that limited what he can say until a specified date… like after the launch of the iPhone. I would love to know how many icons are on Walt’s screen, whether there are any unstated features such as… oh, I don’t know… some kind of new intuitive Voice Recognition which would also reduce the need for a hard keyboard. I wouldn’t eliminate the need (for when you are in meetings, etc.), but it could certainly reduce the need. This is just my wish list for a feature that could blow away what others are doing.

I hear that the phone takes some time to get used to… so It makes sense for Apple to give Walt a phone early, in hopes of a positive review in a couple of weeks. Walt is being careful not to make a judgement until he gets some time to get used to the interface. I have to credit him for being careful to take the time to learn.

Mossberg is Jobs’ biggest brown-noser, so if he criticizes the iPhone it must stink really.

You have to understand that Mossberg is immensely privileged to get this. There’s a huge issue for him not to appear beholden to Apple. It’s an image thing. He’ll likely end up loving the iPhone, because it’s probably almost as great as the hype.

But Walt can’t gush. It would not look good. So he won’t…
