Samsung P520 is compact iPhone competitor

Looking a little like an iPhone that has been through a hot-wash, Samsung’s recently announced P520 cellphone might be the ideal non-Apple alternative for those with smaller hands or pockets. Just 88 x 54 x 8.9mm (shorter and thinner than the LG Prada) and weighing a mere 102g, it’s a triband GSM handset with, frustratingly, EDGE rather than 3G. That 262k colour, QVGA touchscreen – measuring around 2.6-inches – makes up for it a little, though there’s no word on whether it’s a traditional display or fancy capacitive one like the LG and iPhone.

Samsung P520 - a competitor to the iPhone?

Samsung P520 - fancy flip case could conceal an auxilary battery

Other fancies include a 3-megapixel camera, 50MB of internal memory with a microSD slot to augment it, Bluetooth 2.0 (supporting A2DP – are you listening, Apple?), WiFi with UMA, a document viewer and a flip-case that looks similar to the company’s earlier designs which had extended batteries built in. The P520 under its own steam can manage up to 180 minutes talk time or 220 hours standby.

There’s been some talk about whether this could be a potential Google Phone, and while it’s tempting to believe that the search company would partner with someone producing a handset similar in design to the celebrated iPhone but with all the joy of Google’s online applications, the lack of 3G seems like the biggest indicator that it’s not. Plus, I think Google – if they do produce a handset – would be looking for one with a bigger screen to make the most of that online experience.

  1. Samsung has some nice phones indeed, but almost none of them synchronises nicely with a Mac!! Definitely not the latest, more expensive versions…

I think it looks great, shame it doesn’t have 3G, I wonder what the price will be though.

Battery is might be on the weaker side, but if the case is anything like the Upstage, it will be packed with an “external” battery built-in to it.

I don’t think so. I can’t really get into it yet, but as far as I know, the OS will be proprietary.

I’ve been flirting with the Sprint 8830 World Phone. Trust me, it’s day and night using the iPhone on ATT’s EDGE versus Sprint’s speedy broadband like network. Life sucks without 3G.

Keep an eye out for Sprint’s new initiative called Wimax due out sometime next year.

No 3G (like the iPhone) might be a sign that 3G uses too much battery, so we shouldn’t expect 3G befoe atleast 2nd generation of these new phones.

Where would you keep all your video, mp3 etc with 50MB memory? You can’t even keep a tv-episode on this. Or else you have to spend a lot of money on high capacity SD cards. No thanks! I’ll stick to iPhone so far…

One thing (might) be better with this phone: You can choose other mobile services. Allthough I’m in Denmark, and AT&T’s 2-year subscription plan isn’t legal here. Phonecompanies in Denmark can max. keep you for 6 months (or 12 months for business customers).
