Quickie review: elan Form, Nu Form and Wave case for iPhone 3G

Let me start off by saying that I’m not much of a case user, but after handling Griffin’s three cases for the iPhone 3G even I’m impressed with how nice they feel! Think of the elan Form case as a hybrid between hard plastic and leather, while the Nu Form uses hard plastic and rubberized plastic and the Wave case is one big gel-style case – all covered with a separate clear plastic screen cover for the front of the iPhone 3G.  These hard-shell cases should add peace of mind for anyone with slippery fingers; each should be strong enough to protect your precious iPhone 3G from a three to four foot drop.

Assembling the Elan Form and Nu Form is easy as pie – they snap together and come apart vertically along the sides. From an aesthetic point of view the cases look smooth, and they add a nice, contoured feel to the handset. The Wave Case is a little trickier to assemble and take apart; make sure to watch the video below to see “how I do it”.  If both form and function is your thing, then the easy slide-off bottom section is perfect for when you need to dock the iPhone 3G.  Unfortunately the Wave Case doesn’t offer the same easy dock feature, so you’ll need to take it apart if you want to sit your iPhone 3G in the actual Apple dock.

When it comes to the fundamentals, it doesn’t matter which case you opt for: each is designed to give you full access to the microphone, speaker, and Dock Connector, hence the open bottom design.  The top is fully open as well, freeing up the headphone port and Sleep/Wake button.  There’s a cut out on the back for the camera and the left side is fully cut open for access to the side controls.

As I mentioned above, all three cases come with a rigid, non-adhesive clear plastic screen protector, and there’s a black cleaning cloth included in the package too.  This is an excellent way for Griffin to add value to their cases.  You may or may not like the screen protector.  I usually don’t use a screen protector at all and leave the glass opened; I’d be interested to know what you do, so leave what you think in the comments below.

Great review — does anyone know which of these cases is the thinnest? I plan on keeping my iPhone in my front pocket and thickness is an issue.

    Thanks!

I have bought the wave few days ago and i’m very happy. It is definitely not thin and a little heavy but in the pocket i can’t really feel teh difference.

If you want to buy on of this griffin cases, the best way is on http://www.griffintechnology.com/ and use the coupon code FIREWORKS (20% off). With the coupon and the free shipping, the wave cost me 19.99 taxes included

I think they are all about the same thickness but I like the look of the hard leather case more than the hard plasticy nu form case. Also the wave seems cheap to me so I think I will order the elan form hard leather black case

This is a very nice description of each of these phone cases i love the nu form and will be ordering emediatly. the slide show was great. Overall: Great job

i really love the wave case, it fits great and it look awesome. although it does scratch up the front of the phone a little bit, but i plan on always having a case on my phone so it doesnt really matter

  6. I’m not a fan at all of this case’s habit of scratching the plastic surface of the phone. I’ve had mine for a week and there’s already visible scraping from taking the bottom half off. The screen protector is terrible — it’s tough to clean and leaves air bubbles all over the place without extreme care when installing, but the iPhone glass doesn’t really need a screen protector anyway.

I’m sad that my new phone was scratched so quickly. It’s basically a trade-off for the peace of mind that a small drop won’t crush my phone. I went with the leather one, which gives the phone a nice grip that the naked plastic back doesn’t provide. I’m keeping the case on most of the time anyway, but it does bother me that there is scratching that will clearly get worse, especially if I want to sell the device later on.

It’s a really nice looking but I am disappointed because it was very hard to install making my case look really bad
