iPhone update 1.1.1 released

So here’s the shark in the mod-happy waters; Apple has released the 1.1.1 iPhone update and is busy trumpeting the new features – there’s even a happy little video by their sombre-clothed Bob to explain just what differences you’ll notice.

iPhone 1.1.1 firmware update

Functionality-wise there are no massive surprises (still no Flash, sadly, and they’ve not revealed a hidden 3G chip), but the WiFi Music Store is there as are some productivity tweaks such as a double-click Home Button shortcut for favourites or music controls.  Anybody who has been stung by high data roaming charges will be pleased to see the option to turn off EDGE/GPRS, too.

Check out the full list of changes after the cut, plus a caveat that might just spoil your fun…

Updates:

  • iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store
  • Louder speakerphone and receiver volume
  • Home Button double-click shortcut to phone favorites or music controls
  • Space bar double-tap shortcut to intelligently insert period and space
  • Mail attachments are viewable in portrait and landscape
  • Stocks and cities in Stocks and Weather can be re-ordered
  • Apple Bluetooth Headset battery status in the Status Bar
  • Support for TV Out
  • Preference to turn off EDGE/GPRS when roaming internationally
  • New Passcode lock time intervals
  • Adjustable alert volume

The update arrives through iTunes, and currently appears to be a slow process thanks to it both being a big (152.3mb) file and the servers getting hammered.  If, though, you’re using a hacked and/or unlocked iPhone the current stance is that you should definitely hold off updating – reports of iPhones refusing to recognise the AT&T SIM are coming in from all over the web.

I just bricked my phone after applying this update! I was listening to The Tuesday Night Tech show podcast thing (http://www.tuesdaynighttech.com) and all of a sudden I thought they were drunk or something and the phone just went crazy and fell on the floor–all by itself–as if ghosts were penetrating it. Then, I restarted it and it said I needed a new sim. NOW I can’t remember where I was in the TNT show–it was a funny one, too. POUGE THIS!

Well they didn’t add A2DP Bluetooth (which still sucks) but I did buy an album from the new Wi-Tunes store and it was really cool! This was my FIRST actual purchase from the iTunes catalog (not including the free music tuesdays). It worked perfectly (well almost, my credit card on file had expired so I had to update that first, but perfect after that) and when I sync’d back to iTunes it added the music to my computer. VERY COOL!

Now get on the stick Apple and give us some stereo bluetooth goodness!

I have used Ifuntastic to add new ring tones to my phone….. I am not sure if this is considered unlocked or not since my phone is still very much locked. What do you guys suggest… I am a little worried about this update..
