Some developers have said that the big push by Apple for the App Store is undermining web apps. Some claim Apple is pressuring devs into developing for the App Store rather than apps that run in Safari.

A survey of 2300 retail stores reveals that Apple has cleaned up in the smartphone market in Japan, TG Daily reports. Market research company BCN revealed that the iPhone 3G 8GB is easily heading the list, followed by the 16GB iPhone and the NTT CoCoMo Aquos SH-04A.

Apple released its new iPhone 3GS in Japan on Friday. According to the Asahi Shimbun, more than 200 people lined up at Softbank Mobile Corp.'s Omotesando store in Tokyo.

Japanese iPhone carrier Softbank Mobile will introduce a new program giving customers free 8GB iPhones under a two year contract. Disappointment looms for those who just handed over $235 (or about 22,782 Yen) with the plan starting on Friday.

While 90% of Japanese might not show interest for the 3G iPhone (Based on iSHARE survey), it doesn’t mean the upcoming phone from Apple will tank in Japan. Softbank, the carrier that will provide the 3G iPhone said it would be selling the phone at 23,040 yen or roughly $215 up to 34,560 yen.
