Per AT&T representative Brad Mays, current iPhone customers can of course upgrade to the 3G iPhone and pay $199 for the 8 GB model or $299 for the 16 GB version. They will need a new two-year contract. Customers who purchased a 2.5G iPhone on or after May 27 and want to swap it out for a new iPhone will be able to do so. without incurring an additional handset charge for the new device. (There will be a 10 percent re-stocking fee.) They will of course need to turn in their 2.5G iPhone. For other situations, there will be an unsubsidized price, which we have
not yet announced. We will announce that price in the coming weeks.
Stay tuned for more updates.

hiiiiiiiiiiiiii
Here’s a question I’ve never seen answered. I have an iPhone. If I upgrade to the 3G iPhone (and presumably can continue using my telephone number with the 3G model) – what am I supposed to do with the old one? I don’t want to sell it, I don’t want to use it as a phone (I don’t need 2 cellphones). Is there any possible use for it as, essentially, an iPod Touch? Does this require a different sim card? I know there was quite a lot of talk last year that you can’t use an iPhone even as an iPod without a sim card. What are the available choices for people like me?
Larry-
One thing you can do is go to your local Best Buy or Walmart or anywhere that sells pay as you go phones. There is one model that costs $15, with that you can stick it in your 2.5G iPhone and then you will still have the phone in case you need it plus a full functioning iPod touch :) Hope it helps!
You can use old iphone(2.5G) as ipod touch. No SIM necessary.
what if i don’t have an iphone..but have the blackberry & a current existing at&t customer…can i still swap or upgrade to the new iphone 3G??
Hi,
Are you sure everyone is eligible for the upgrade?
Read this from AT&T

Will the existing iphone customers have the $199 price?
I think it stinks that AT&T is penalizing long term existing clients by charging us $200 more than an new client. poor client management. I was interested in a new iphone but now I will probably change service providers.
I agree. I’ve been a loyal AT&T customer for years (since the Cingular days), and now when I want to upgrade to the iPhone 3G I have to pay $399. just because I have a year left on my current contract? That sucks.
Occasionally you arrive throughout a post that just appears to produce sense. Thanks a great deal
This is a great deal at $49! Only downside is that the battery life on the 3G or 3GS is sometimes a bit short. However, for those of you that are looking to extend the life, I found this product on Amazon for under $14 with freight included and it works great. Here’s the link:
