A few weeks later than many expected, Apple have finally announced a memory upgrade for both the iPhone and iPod Touch. The iPhone has a new 16GB model join the range, priced at $499, while the iPod Touch line is bolstered by a 32GB model. Both are otherwise identical to the previous versions, which remain on sale, and feature the 1.1.3 firmware preinstalled.
That means your options for an iPhone are 8GB priced at $399 or 16GB for $499, while your iPod Touch line-up consists of 8GB for $299, 16GB for $399 and 32GB for $499.

Apple Adds New iPhone & iPod touch Models
CUPERTINO, California—February 5, 2008—Apple® today added new models of the iPhone™ and iPod® touch which have double the memory, doubling the amount of music, photos and videos that customers can carry with them wherever they go. I’m sorry. $500 for a device is a lot of money. I can think of a lot of other things I can spend that money on. Apple is desperate because everybody has some kind of digital music player. It is just replacements now and the market is very slow.

I got a 32GB iPod touch. Yes, it’s costly, but I sold my iPod classic and a few other small items to justify the expense (and lower it) and in the end what I have is a full-featured iPod that handles my music library without my needing to make special playlists or squeeze a few songs into limited space. It’s also more logical as a video player, as I can fit several full-length movies into it.
I was also considering the future. The SDK is out this month, and when new software starts to show up for the iPod touch, I would like to know that I have room on my device to store it and use it.
This boost in size makes the iPod touch a true alternative to the classic iPod lineup. My library is with me wherever I go, but in addition to the music and movie library, I get all the extra things; Internet, Maps, Weather, Notes, Calendars, Contacts, YouTube, Calculator, and Mail for starters. Unlike my iPod Classic, this iPod can look up movie times, fetch me the day’s news, or let me download the latest songs right from my iPod. It was worth selling the Classic for that!
Yes, I gave up 48GB in the switch, but the trade is well worth it.
And why no SD reader? More hardware, more parts to deal with, and no guarantee that your software would be on the device or that Apple had some quality control standards on the memory itself.
I like the way the iPod touch is built. If you can’t justify spending the money on one, then please refrain from the sour grapes. The 32GB iPod touch is the iPod I’ve been waiting for since 2001.
