An early comparison: iPhone 3G vs HTC Magic

Yeah, you might be asking: iPhone 3G or HTC Magic? Chris Davies of SlashGear has wrote an early comparison of these devices.

comparison_iphone_htcmagicHere is the pointers:

Touchscreens

  • Both have capacitive touchscreens
  • The former 3.5-inches and the latter 3.2-inches
  • Both running at 480 x 320.

Size

  • The iPhone 3G (4.5 x 2.4 x 0.48 inches) a little longer, wider and thinner than the Magic (4.45 x 2.17 x 0.54 inches).

Weight

  • The Magic is lighter: 4.18oz versus the iPhone 3G’s 4.7oz.

Hardware

  • The Magic has a 528MHz Qualcomm MSM7201a chipset.
  • Apple has a standard 3.5mm headphone jack
  • HTC insist on you using an adapter dongle with their ExtUSB port.
  • The Magic has native miniUSB supports.
  • The iPhone 3G has proprietary connector.

Home screen

  • The HTC Magic has dedicated search, home, menu and back buttons directly under the touchscreen, then hardware send/end call keys and a trackball with enter button.
  • There’s a volume control on the left hand side, but there’s no dedicated camera shortcut.
  • Apple make do with one home button, volume controls, a lock button on the top and a physical ringer switch, which is certainly more useful when the phone is in your pocket or bag.

Connectivity

  • The iPhone 3G delivers HSDPA, WiFi b/g and Bluetooth, although the only Bluetooth profiles supported are the headset and handsfree.
  • The HTC Magic has 7.2Mbps HSDPA, WiFi b/g and Bluetooth 2.0, and there’s much more flexibility in the Bluetooth stack.

Capacity

  • The iPhone 3G is available in 8GB or 16GB, with no way to expand that capacity
  • The Magic has a mere 512MB ROM but a microSD slot with up to 16GB cards.

Camera

  • The iPhone has just 2-megapixels camera with a fixed-focus lens
  • The Magic has a 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus.

Don’t want to sound like a fanboy but that HTC has a fat arse too. Look how thick it appears on the image.

Much prefer the design of the iPhone.

  2. tara says:

    are u kidding,
    magic kills the iphone,
with the sole fact that it can record video

  3. amol says:

    @tara
    true

  4. clivesiphone says:

My iPhone records video very well, thanks. It’s an app called Cycorder, and it’s an excellent video recorder.

  5. Robert says:

If the Magic is Windows, and HTC is Windows, they can keep it. That’s my gentle way of saying they can stuff it.

  6. Sam says:

    @Robert

This would be a 2nd gen Android phone, to be sold in Europe on Vodaphone. No word yet on NA release.

The magics operating system is Android, not windows. And I agree with Nick, the iPhone has more cosmetic appeal than the Magic BUT the Magic has way more potential considering the comparitively more flexible open source software. The G1 (Dream) was too slow and laggy, not to mention bulky but from a practical point of view, superior to the iPhone on many levels. For example, replaceable memory and battery, picture messaging, exclusive apps like ShopSavvy which are usually jaw dropping to most people who see it for the 1st time, not to mentiom that it is insurable!

Compared to the G1, the Magic is faster, more responsive, sleeker, and is capable of everything the G1 is capable of,and more plus more powerful and faster. Battery life has been improved, it has better connectivity like bluetooth 2.0 (iPhone does not). Considering the Magic is lighter than both devices it is sure to be much more durable when dropped as well. If it does break, you probably have insurance against damage, theft, and loss anyway.

Bottom line: The G1 could not kill the iPhone due to a buggy and comparitively laggier interface but the Magic appears to be polished and sophisticated enough to finish the job that the G1 started.

May you rest in pieces IPhone. Lol

  8. Wireless says:

Wait to the iphone 3.0 and then repeat the comparison. You will have a surprisse.

Been using my magic now for 4 weeks and can safely say its makes my old iphone look like a childs toy. Don’t get me wrong apple produce great products they
just don’t always live up to the hype which people drum up about them. iphones are good but there not this good.

  10. Matey says:

I think both have there ups and downs its a personal pref, htc have make a great looking phone is very easy to use and fast unlike the iphone once you install a couple of apps forget restarting it, and im sure i age a fewq years waiting for it to start apps of any sort

  11. zelrik says:

I wanted to buy a magic but … $70 per month with Rogers here in Canada… no thanks :/. Also the 3 year plan deal doesnt make me feel good either.

  12. TimmerUK says:

The HTC Magic is outstanding and performance wise is much better than the iPhone 3G … will wait to see how good the new iPhone is… Long live Android, this is the deathnail for all other mobile apps ….

I dropped AT&T (U.S.) and the iPhone 2 days ago. Signed up with T-Mobile and got the HTC Magic. I LOVE IT!!! The phone itself is far superior with the touch screen and the physical buttons. Not to mention the track ball is nice! Also, the Android OS kills the iPhone 3.0 software.

Most consumers will follow trends and buy the iPhone. That’s fine w/ me. I don’t mind allowing them to be pawns for Apple and AT&T. They get what those companies give them. I get what users want.

By the way, everyone that has an iPhone (including my fiancee) loves my HTC Magic. Some are even upset they re-upped their contract with AT&T to get an iPhone. Now they’re stuck for 2 years, or pay the ETF……SUCKERS!!!!

  14. Smeagol says:

For me, HTC is about 70% cheaper… no brainer really…

  15. Bianca says:

i have a HTC magic and im not very happy, i loved it at first but its my third one in less than a month, the first one just wouldnt turn on my second one had to to some hardware update and i was going to lose all my data so this third one apperntly will be PERFECT ! honestly if i have one more problem with this phone, i dont want to bother with it anymore. i always seem to pick the phones with problems !
if you include all my htc magic in total.
my 3 year contract isnt even up and ive been threw 5 PHONES going on my 6th with this 3rd HTC magic.
right now im not recomending it.

  16. herbalife says:

Wohh just what I was searching for, thanks for putting up.
