So far, the multi-touch interface on the iPhone has kind of just been a novelty. Sure, it changes the way we use the phone, but it hasn't completely overhauled the way we think about interacting with technology. However, Apple has now filed a patent app that could be pointing to future multi-touch functions and bringing them beyond taps, swipes and pinches.

This new patent shows that multi-touch could be used in conjunction with other inputs to make for new ways of controlling things. Accelerometer control is one such example, as is force sensitivity, voice recognition and even visual recognition.

The potential here is practically limitless, meaning we could one day shake the iPhone to perform one function, flip it on it's side to perform another, speak a word to activate a program and more.
