How to put DVD's on your iPhone using free software

DVD's can be converted to MP4 video files using Handbrake: URL

If copy protection is an issue with the disc you are using, google "DVD43" which will solve the issue and works fine with handbrake.

Install handbrake from the above URL. The screenshots I have below are the Windows GUI version but the Mac version is similar. Once you run Handbrake, it will ask for a DVD source. Direct it to the VIDEO_TS folder on the DVD

It will then scan the DVD contents. (You do have to click OK to this message)

One it comes up, choose the chapter you wish to rip. In this example, I am wanting at just the first episode so I pick the first chapter with the right length to be an episode. If your drop-down list shows nothing, you may be having a copy protection issue (see note above)

Set the video to mp4, audio to AAc, choose the destination folder and filename, and set the width to 480. Do not set the height, it will auto program this. With a width of 480, you end up with a video file that fills the frame well in both zoomed in and out. Set cropping to "auto crop" which cuts out the black bars.

On the video tab, choose 2-pass encoding and target file size. I like to save space so I set it to 400M for a 2 hours movie or 100M for a 30minute episode. Larger file means better quality, this section is really just up to your personal preference.

On the audio tab, you can choose what audi track and quality you want. This is all your personal preference.

When done, choose "encode video" or "add to queue" if you want to setup several copies (like if you want to encode an entire season of a show overnight)

Once done, you can add the file to your itunes library. If the sound seems low, you can change this within itunes (look at the file info, options, set volume to +100%) You can also change it from the default (movie) to a TV episode by changing the setting on the file info in itunes.
