It's not the first way to get Skype up and running on your iPhone, but it promises to be the most elegant (that is, until Skype themselves come up with a client): Shape Services have released a beta of their IM+ for Skype software that is compatible with any Java browser, including Apple's cellphone. Right now the site is obviously getting hammered by early-adopters, and is refusing to play ball, but until we can bring you some hands-on details here's a few launch tidbits to tide you over...

The service is based on the SkypeOut package, which allows low-cost calls to landlines via Skype's VoIP system. Shape Services appear to be using a callback system; it apparently does not need WiFi and is independent of 3G/CDMA/GSM no matter which network or handset you use it with.
As well as voice calls you can send normal Skype IMs to both mobile and normal Skype users. The software is a one-off purchase and has no monthly subscription.
We'll be bringing you a hands-on review as soon as the site is back up, so keep reading MY iTablet!
