The Mogul builds on the PPC-6700, featuring a similar slide out QWERTY keyword, large touch 2.8” TFT screen with 65K colors and 320 x 240 resolution, and five-way navigation button.

New enhancements include longer battery life with approximately 20 percent more than the PPC-6700. The Mogul comes with a standard 1500mAH battery, but an optional 2100 mAH is also available for purchase. There is more internal memory, which is increased from 128MB to 256MB, and can be expanded with a microSD card. Sprint ships with a 512MB card, but the Mogul can support up to 2GB. The Mogul is no doubt thinner than the PPC-6700, which measures at 4.33” x 2.32” x .73”. The antenna is also tucked neatly inside the device. If taking pictures with a phone is your thing, then you’ll be happy to know the Mogul sports a 2-megapixel camera with flash, auto-focus, 8X digital zoom, and camcorder capabilities with sounds. The thumbwheel is also convenient, enabling one-handed operation.

HTC Mogul for Sprint

At launch, the Mogul supports EV-DO Rev. 0 data speeds on the Sprint Mobile Broadband Network. You’ll be able to take advantage of increased data speeds when Sprint provides support or EV-DO Rev. A technology on the device via a free software upgrade. Keep in mind there’s also built-in WiFi (802.11 b/g) for use on any accessible Wi-Fi network. Coming post-launch is the Sprint Music store where you can purchase and download stereo quality tracks instantly over the air for $0.99! The Mogul also feature On-Demand: customized, up-to-date web content such as sport, weather, news, money and movie information at the push of a button. This is a special feature available only from Sprint.

Of course the Mogul sports my least favorite mobile operating system on the planet, Windows Mobile 6 Pocket PC Phone Edition. The good news is it’s sporting an Intel PXA-263/Qualcomm MSM6500 chipset. I noticed switching between apps is a lot zippier than the other HTC devices as well as the PPC-6700.

Feel free to take advantage of the Mogul as a wireless modem for your laptop to hop on the Sprint Mobile Broadband network. Sprint even included a USB cable should you not want to tether via Bluetooth. Speaking of Bluetooth, the Mogul features built-in Bluetooth wireless technology version 2.0 with stereo support. In my test, the Mogul paired up with the Etymotic ety8, Pulsar 260 Stereo Bluetooth headset and the Gennum nXZEN 6000 Bluetooth headset without a hitch.

Overall, the Mogul is a solid device, a worthy upgrade from the PPC-6700, making it a strong competitor to the newly released Treo 755p. I received my review unit late last week, giving me a few days with the device; I've found it very pleasurable to use. However, the design is a bit bland for my taste. That being said, the Mogul sports every possible convenience built directly on the device. The direct access to email, Internet Explorer, phone, voice dial, camera and an on/off switch for Wi-Fi is a super nice touch!

I give the Mogul and overall score of 3 ¾ out of 5 rating.

The Mogul by HTC for Sprint will be available this week at Sprint.com and in Sprint business sales channels for $399.99 with a two-year service agreement. Regular Sprint customers will be able to purchase the Mogul in Sprint retail stores in July.

Are punctuation marks on the keyboard back lit this time? I couldn’t stand that on the 6700! Thanks!

  2. Boaz says:

    Dude,

    Are you sitting at Gladstones?

  3. Vincent Nguyen says:

The entire keyboard is lit up.

    Are you sitting at Gladstones?
Nope, Maui.

  5. Clark says:

I can’t believe that this device doesn’t support the SDHC format. With phones coming out with up to 8GB built in, I just can’t understand why this phone only supports micro SD cards up to 2GB when 8GB micro SD cards are now becoming available.

  6. slliks says:

it does not support the sdhc format because of course they are going to get you to buy this model and then bang! newer model with more capacity and internal memory

  7. McG says:

Cant buy one online, with a rep or in stores… what’s up ?

As of Monday June 20 current subscribers cannot buy one. Or maybe its just my Sprint account.

Yeah it’s out alright but just try to buy one as an existing customer.

I tried buying it on Monday June 20 both online and over the phone and of courese they are not sold in stores yet.
Online it stated that I was not eligible to upgrade or buy it full price.

On the phone two different sales reps stated that it was not on their list of phones for purchase.
They had to go to their website http://www.sprint.com to see that it was even available.

Never mind the fact that they WOULD let me buy it online as a NEW subscriber.

I have been sooo waiting for this phone… and now I CAN GET IT…. AHHHHHHH

  8. jabber_wolf says:

With Sprints Navigation feature coming out, it can be your GPS turn by turn device. That plus real time Google map finding functions based on your location.
Oh and it can play FLASH on its browsers, hmmm iphone can’t??!?!

I’m pretty sure there is a fix for the HDSD memory, but they already have 4gb regular SDmicro cards out there. I think they are going to be up to 8mb by 2008. So whats the big deal, have a few in a little case attachted to your keychain. Those things are about as big as your fingernail.

  9. Donna says:

As an existing customer of Sprint, I phone-ordered my Mogul on Friday the 22nd PM (internet ordering would NOT work). They promised Mon-Tues delivery. I thought “Yeah, right” but, wow, they delivered it Monday before 2 PM!
So far I’m impressed. I did have to do a soft reset last night for some reason, but so far it’s great.
I’ve tried to set it up for Yahoo Mobile with NO SUCCESS. They don’t have HTC as a manufacturer in the list. I input the confirmation number but they reply that they can’t process my request.
It took me a while to figure out where to set tones and sound notification. Basically there are three places where you configure these settings.
I’m not sure what software is available for WM6 so I haven’t tried to improve its usability yet. Need to do more research.
Sprint’s Digital Lounge site has no add ons for it - you click and a popup tells you “Nothing available.” You’d think they would have the thing synchronized with the launch.
    Hope you find this helpful.

  10. Gaines says:

There’s a bunch of reviews and resources that might help you decide about buying the Mogul or help out if you’ve already bought one at http://www.SprintMogul.net

  11. crs says:

Can the Mogul be used to pick up signals in other countries with it’s WIFI

  12. Kyle says:

I have the sprint mogul as of July 18, 2007 and i’m loving it! It’s an excellent pocket pc; the internet is quick, the whole qwuery keypad lights up, the camera is also impressively good. So overall i think this smartphone is great. Only think im upset about is that theres no flash player for it, but im still searching for one, if anybody does find one can you tell me where at my email address [email protected]
I hope that this information has helped all of you debating about getting this phone.
Oh and i just typed all of this from my mogul =)

  13. shonit says:

Can you see youtube on this device.. ?

  14. Clark says:

I’ve played around with one of these at the Sprint Store, and I forgot to check and see if it already has it installed (since it is an HTC device), but most HTC devices have “streaming media player” which doesn’t support Flash, but will allow you to look at some vids at m.youtube.com.

Also I’m looking closely at buying one now that many people have reported that it does indeed support SDHC. Several forums have people reporting 4GB micro SDHC cards are working perfectly and Sandisk should have an 8GB micro card available by December of this year.

  15. cindy says:

Does this devicce support download of games for playing liek a pc? such as fulltilt poker?

  16. I read somewhere yesterday that this actually DOES support sdhc format (and then I ordered one. Did I just waste my money on that sdhc card?

  17. Matt says:
I read somewhere yesterday that this actually DOES support sdhc format (and then I ordered one. Did I just waste my money on that sdhc card?
No you should be fine. I have a SDHC 4GB MicroSD card in my Mogul right now and it works perfectly.

  18. David says:

I have replaced my Treo 650 with the Mogul, have hated every minute with the damn thing. Have to reboot it once every two weeks, and I haven’t installed anything on it. Not even “on demand”.

The palm device was far more useful and user friendly. For example, the phone virtual buttons change places based on what you are doing. It is very annoying to have the call history button change places all the time…and why do I have to change modes for a keypad or the ability to turn on my speaker phone.

Also, every time I use the wifi, I have to turn off the phone portion or it will make a phone call instead of using the wifi. you can’t even force the wifi to be default for IE.

  19. Frank says:

Saw a couple of things here worth commenting on, I have had mine about a month.

At least for me locally, the device supports RevA upload / download out of the box. This is in the Chicago suburbs. It has to be RevA (personality type 1 if you really know the guts of the technology) since I gut an upload of 300kbps, and that isn’t possible with Rev0. I’m in crappy RF when I’m at home, presumably it would be higher if I were in better RF.

Uploads…I’ve seen above 1 Mbps/second with large file transfers to the memory card (like downloading firefox for example).

EVDO and Wifi are what I expected.

But I will also reflect some other comments here; some of the apps appear to have memory leaks, which on Windows Mobile leads to instability after a while. In particular, if you inadvertently launch multiple copies of the same application because the phone didn’t appear to respond, even if you close them all out it doesn’t seem to leave the phone too healthy.

Internet Explorer sucks. Opera seems to have fixed that for $24.

Windows Media sucks as well, but it will stream radio over the internet (either Wifi or EVDO). I am using conduits.com Pocket Player, and that isn’t too bad. But it also appears to have memory leak issues if you run it for days at a time.

The phone app sucks too, seems to be the same thing they delivered with the XV 6600 3 years ago. Button presses, even though the give the visual indication/flash seem to be ignored sometimes. You don’t want to try and dial this thing while driving. If you are a road warrior that needs to take calls while driving, this phone is not for you.

No “workable” youtube that I’ve seen so far, but this would seem to be a good platform for it.

But what brought me here tonight was curiosity about SD HC cards. I tried a 6 GB HC card, and that was a resounding flop; only sees 1.7 GB.

Was going to try a 4 GB SD HC card, but Amazon has a warning that if your device doesn’t have the HC logo on it, not likely it will work.

Am curious if someone can post a model number of one that at least should work.

Overall, I like the device because the display is larger, and I have a much larger choice of apps than the brew device I was coming from. But as a phone, I personally don’t think this was ready for prime time.

But the data’s good, and it’s the only RevA device you can hold in your hand today. I bought it to be a sort of i-phone, and for that it seems to do okay. Wish the battery would last longer, but I’m near a USB port 10 hours a day or in the car usually. So this doesn’t affect me that much.

I did discover that you can do a Windows XP style reboot by holding the power key to force the handset to shutdown, rather than just wacking the reset or removing the battery.

This is miles ahead of Motorola’s Q and the 6700 IMHO.

  20. Judah says:

Agree with Frank here on a lot of points.Definetly seems like RevA is functioning.I got mine 2 weeks ago.

Definetly look into the software hacks for this thing!Wow the things you can do.Streaming video.Flash.Cingular music recognition software.etc.

But about the SDHC cards I am curious what brand MATT is using and whether or not he check to see how much it was seeing(as Frank mentioned it was only seeing 1.7GB of a 4GB card,it still accepted the card but only “saw” 1.7 GB).

Hey Frank did you try to see whether you can load the 4GB card with say 3.7 GB worth of files and then see if you can view them all, irregardless of what it “says” it can see?

  21. Barb says:

I ordered my mogul 6800 the other day and I am waiting impatiently for it to get here! I have researched and researched and this seems to be what most people have recommended and review are generally good. Is this phone ever going to be able to get Sprint TV? I am a little nervous about this being an actual mini computer and hope I won’t have trouble working it. Please let me know how you like it.

    Barb

  22. Mike says:

I have enjoyed the phone..a replacement for the treo 650–not at all. But it has the functions I need that the 650 does not. It would be an issue for the road warrior I must admit, But I love the phone. It depends on what you are doing with it. The only issue I have is the blinking lights are a little too much. Thunderstorm last night, and I thought the storm went on much longer because the blinking green light lit up the room, but I am sure there will be something to get past that soon.
I was told by the sptint guy that sprint tv and navigation just don’t play well with windows mobile….sounds like a sprint issue.

  23. Christian says:

I have owned my Mogul for about 2 weeks now. This is mainly in reference to the questions about the SDHC microSD cards. There is a .cab file (google “SDHC.cab for Mogul”) and you should be able to find somewhere to download it. I just ordered a 8GB SDHC card but it hasn’t arrived yet. I will post again once I have had a chance to load the SDCH.cab file onto my Mogul and test the card.

  24. tony boy says:

iva had the mogul for about 6 months and I’ve installed all the upgrades for it and all the new tech. I currently have the I phone software for it and it keeps me on the edge of me seat every time I use it. I got it for ten bucks and its awesome. I don’t regret it the software is extremely off the wall…..it rocks..if you would like more details email me to EL

  25. Mogul2Iphone says:

Hi…I’ve had my mogul for about 2 months now and I really like it. I love the large screen and the key board for quick typing. I pretty much use all of the features on it and I am constantly learning all of the other things that it does.

Only thing that disappoints me is not being able to view youtube videos. I used to have a Palm Centro and the videos viewed just fine. You would think that a phone as sophisticated as the Mogul would let you do pretty much anything. To bad that isn’t the case.

As far as the two flashing lights, I like them. And I think that they attract a lot of attention and add to the phones sophisticated appearance. However at night I have to turn my phone face down because if I didn’t then the lights would keep me up. They blink like an outdoor store sign or something. It is as if they are saying ‘look at how cool I am!’ There is no way to miss them. They are really big for a phone and they blink so brightly that a blind person could probably see them.(small chuckle) I could probably use them for flashing traffic lights! (Lol) Anywho, I still like them though. I kind of wish that it gave me the option to change the color of the lights to maybe pink and blue or purple instead of the green. Or maybe it would be neat if it allowed me to assign a certain color to a contact for the my missed calls.

Recently I downloaded a S2U2 interface which locks the phone similar to the Iphone and it also displays how many text messages or voicemails that you have in a better format. The software allows you to see who called you without having to click notication and it allows the pictures of your caller to show full screen.

I also downloaded a contacts program that is similiar to the Iphone and it lets me scroll thru my contants with the touch of a finger. It is really neat. It replaces the regular contacts format but you still have access to it if you want to edit or view. And you can view your text messages and scroll thru them with your finger as well just like an Iphone.
Eventually Im hoping to have my phone work completely like the Iphone. I saw a comment from I believe Tony who said that he did his for only ten dollars. Can you let me know how I can go about doing that? Thank you.

  26. Christina Johnson says:

I just got this phone yesterday because the new Samsung Instinct (got it Thursday night) did not work for me as far as not having the forced Roaming feature like some of the older Sprint phones. I need this feature because I use my phone, more than anything, at my job. Sprint told me that the newer phones coming out will NOT have a forced roaming feature because of the $$$$$$. Don’t know what I’ll do by the time that happens.

I came from palm technology, so this phone is obviously taking much more time to get used to. I haven’t been able to research and play with it as much as I’d like, but at this point, the two main things I’ve tried to do (syncing and set up of work email) haven’t worked. HELP!!! My syncing keeps getting errors in connection. I feel like I can’t play with this phone if I can’t even begin this part of it correctly.
