Apple mini-USB plug seriously over-packaged

Wow. You know how Apple issued that recall for their mini-USB plugs? Well, it seems now the company is sending out replacements for the devices. However, check out the box that thing came in.

I think there’s a key word in the name of the product. You know, “mini.” That box could’ve fit at least twenty of those things, most likely more. I guess there’s comfort in knowing your shipment was well packaged and won’t be broken during travel, but come on! This is ridiculous!

All that was in the box was the plug and an instruction sheet. Apparently, if you don’t return the recalled plug, Apple may charge your credit card for it. That’s awfully threatening sounding, don’t you think? Especially when dealing with a defective product of their own!

The packaging is a bit OTT!

However, the reason for the threatening sounding charge to your credit card if you don’t return the other one, is that they need you to return them – not because they’re valuable, but because they represent a liability.

The whole point of this exercise is to get them out of circulation where they could continue to cause potentially dangerous situations for people and therefore a financial risk to both Apple and their supplier.

That’s because they send multiple to many people & it’s cheaper from a workflow perspective for them to standardize on this for the most possible scenarios.

For example, I’m awaiting 7 replacements.

My roommate ordered some plastic champagne glasses online she needed for a catering event, and the SIZE of the box the glasses came in was downright wasteful.

It was way to big and unnecessary. These companies (including Apple) need to seriously re-consider their packaging.

Can you please tell me what the return service is? I tried to use USPS but they won’t take it because it is not theirs? I have the label but nowhere does it tell you who the return service is. Not FEDEX or UPS I’m at a loss as to how to return it. Thanks for any help

    CJ,
DHL is the carrier. You cannot schedule a pickup on their website, you need to call them. They will come to your place.

  7. This is quite a hot information. I think I’ll share it on Facebook.
