Of course, there's no need to download the package if all you want to do is unlock your handset - you need only follow the team's instructions and go to the http://jailbreak.toc2rta.com page - but if you're curious as to what exactly you're running on your precious handset then, assuming you can understand it, hopefully you'll be reassured.
The Dev Team has currently shifted most of their focusto the iPod Touch and producing new applications for the PMP, perhaps because of its increasing popularity as a PDA. However they promise that iPhone development will continue.

if you find out please let me know im in the same boat you are
you just need to restore the iPod in iTunes. It will delete everything from your iPod (factory settings), but you can easily sync it again
