Update: wait a minute, if the SIM slot is suppose to be at the top, then what’s this slot-thing on the left hand side of the iPhone? It has the appearance of an IR port, but there’s no reason that Apple would include this. Also, IR slots are reflective, and there is no reflection to be seen on it.

I don’t care what anyone says, but I’ll bet you dollar for oranges or I’ll eat my shorts that the iPhone will have a SIM slot. It makes absolutely no sense why it wouldn’t. One of the SIM’s main purposes in life is used for storing contact info as well as allowing subscribers to easily switch from one phone to another.
It would be dumb for AT&T to sell the iPhone with an embedded SIM card. That being said, Omar donated an image taken from Macworld showing what seems like a SIM slot at the top of the iPhone. iPhone Alley believes the SIM card can be loaded or taken out in a similar fashion as a replacing a battery for the Apple Remote; which you can do so, by pushing into a small hole and having the tray pop out cradling the SIM card.
So it’s up to all you hackers out there to figure a way to unlock the iPhone so us globetrotters can switch out AT&T’s SIM for a pre-paid SIM.iPhone has SIM tray after all [via iPhone Matters]

Edward, first of all, there is a link to your site as the source. Please do not threaten me, I’m a very civilized person. Just for threatening me with your lawyers (that only works with Steve Jobs), I’m leaving the images up, so send your lawyers!
lol, so what you’re saying is that you posted a pic on the internet without a watermark, and you expected that no one would want to use it. Be glad this site gave you a link back, that’s more than some places do.
He gave you proper credit, you should be happy that he’s giving your site some exposure. But go ahead and threaten people with legal action, that’s a great way to get more readers.
Just some free friendly advice, and you can do what you wish to do with it, but you may wish to seriously contact your lawyers about “So it’s up to all you hackers out there to figure a way to unlock the iPhone so us globetrotters can switch out AT&T’s SIM for a pre-paid SIM”. You may have overstepped a fine line. Sounds to me like you’re asing people to commit a crime.
Kirk,
I assume you have established that you even have a right to that image? In any event, you sure manage to come off as a d!ck, when you could have just asked nicely and likely got the response you desired.

ET, for your reading pleasure: DMCA Exemptions Allow You to Unlock Cell Phones.
“Unlocking your cell phone is now fully legal here in the U.S.—at least for the next three years.”
The only way this doesn’t apply is if Apple/ATT integrates the SIM into the device and physically prevents it from working on other networks. This we know is not the case because there are numerous confirmation that the iPhone does indeed have a SIM slot.
Next time, kindly do a little research before making yourself sound ignorant to the world. And by the way, what I said was actually only half-serious.
Whatever – it must suck to be you.
The thing on the right is a music volume button!!!! watch the apple keynote
The vertically long shape on the side is a volume control.
hmm, I thought there was only one button on the whole iPhone? Doesn’t a volume controller count as a button?
Could the volume (the long one on the side) be some form of compressed and extremely squished trackpad? Then it wouldn’t be a button.

That’s very true Walt…but why??? Why put a volume control on the side when I can use my finger to control the volume on the screen?

Sorry about this long quote… not quite sure how to clean it up, only leaving yours… with the comment numbers and all; I’ll just leave it. to answer, maybe for easy volume control while the phone is up to your ears? Preventing you from saying “hold on a sec while I turn up or down my volume,” while in the middle of a conversation. Just a thought.

The HTC Dash has an integrated volume strip that I and many others never-ever use.
“Why put a volume control on the side when I can use my finger to control the volume on the screen?”
Why put an eject button on the keyboard when I can drag the disk to the trash can? Why put volume controls on the keyboard when I can just click on the volume control in the menu bar?
In the case of volume, if something is painfully loud, I don’t want it ripping through my ears while I’m frantically clicking around the interface to turn it down.
In regards to the SIM slot, macrumors.com has recently posted a spec sheet on the iPhone and it clearly states that there is a “SIM tray”.
