It was only a matter of time until Apple and a Japanese carrier pounded out a deal. This is of course made possible thanks to the upcoming 3G iPhone. SoftBank released a very short and to the point press release today, stating that they will be the one to carry the iPhone in Japan. It is not mentioned whether or not the device would be an exclusive.

"SOFTBANK MOBILE Corp. today announced it has signed an agreement with Apple® to bring the iPhone™ to Japan later this year." -Press Release

For some reason this style of vague and short press releases have been whats cool lately. The fact that they do not mention in this statement, is that in Japan they do not run any GSM networks. There, they are all W-CDMA, which is the 3G upgrade path from GSM. The 3G iPhone, will of course pack the W-CDMA air interface, after all, that's what makes it 3G.
