Following the iPhone 3.0 software released just about two weeks ago, Apple has recently pushed out its iPhone 3.1 software with the accompanying SDK for developers. The update improves video editing, app integration and extra speed boosts as well as some minor tweaks.
What’s new in iPhone OS 3.1 Beta build?
- Video editing on iPhone 3GS wont overwrite the clip over the original when you are editing a clip.
- iPhone vibrates when moving icons
- “Fraud Protection” toggle has been added to settings under Safari.
- iPhone boot time is now faster.
- Voice Control now works over Bluetooth.
- New APIs to enable third party apps to access videos and edit them.
- Updated AT&T profile to 4.2
- Updated modem firmware to 5.08.01
- Improvements to OpenGL and Quartz.

so, when is it coming to us?
What do you bet that the AT&T update to 4.2 kills the tethering work around that has been circulating the net? I am betting that it does.
@ RD:
That’s probably a good bet. Seems like they got this update awfully fast after releasing 3.0. I would have expected a .1 update sometime in the fall.
I always like to have the latest updates ASAP, but I may have to wait on this one. Plus, since I have a 3G and not the S, I don’t think I really need any of these updates.
I have the 3GS… As the update is not that significant I will hold off as well until a Jailbreak has been released for this one… As of today, the Jailbreak for 3.0 still hasn’t been released yet… No rush as my iPhone works great and so I will wait!!!
Yeah I have the 3G and will wait on this one too. Not much in it for me based on what I’ve heard so far…
REALLY hope I can turn change voice control settings on the new version. Phone keeps calling random contacts. I am terrified.
There is no 3.1 for standard 3G users as of yet,
it is only for 3Gs users.
When a 3.1 update comes out for 3G, I suggest you hold off as
it updates the modem firmware which slims or kills your chances for a soft unlock; if you need it.
ok – so when are they going to finally allow us to put ring tones on text messages. my phone 8 years ago could do it….. c’mon apple – its such a simple request….
I have been using the tethering thing on my 3g s since day one. My phone is running 3.1 and I am actually using tethering right now to connect my laptop to this webpage.
I want AVRCP support for stereo Bluetooth controls!
I am using 3.1 on my 3G and its hell the phone keeps turning off when in standby. all the normal hacks lke tethering still work.
Im just waiting for the next beta so i can use my phone again.
I hope this will solve the wireless bug, since everyone has trouble connecting to their wireless with the 3.0 update. I doubt it though..
I updated to 3.1 on my iPhone 3G (with Rogers). Now I no longer have web access over 3G. Nothing works over 3G, email, Safari etc…
Yea I agree. I really hope that Apple will fix the wirless bug problem that everyone keeps complaining about. I hope Apple will add AVRCP to the iPod Touch so that we can recieve pictures and etc…
I won´t try the beta yet- until Apple actually brings it out to the public….
3GS iphone is really 2 times faster the battery is only 2 times worse than with 3G
If you want to do picture messaging you will have to update to 3.1
If Apple doesn’t include AVRCP for Bluetooth in 3.1, I will be pissed. For Gods Sake, they sell stereo bluetooth headphones as accessories to the iphone that dont fully work because you cant control the fwd-rev track function from the headphones! You cant make voice calls using bluetooth. These things are standard on cheapie phones!! WTF?? Apple needs to pull their head out of their keester and start releasing bug fixes. Better yet, release complete software that does what it is supposed to do !!
I heard that the 3.1 firmware release will most probably be released in september on the same day as the apple music media event.
On July 8, “I Luv iPhone” complained about not being able to customize sounds for text messages. I agree! Please, everyone, go to http://www.Apple.com/Feedback and submit your ideas for improvements! It’s fast and super easy.
I am soooo annoyed at iphone and voice recognition. I bought a blueant for my daughter to keep her safe so she can talk “handsfree”… what a joke!!!!! You cannot even with ‘nicknames’ ring the right person. What a crock….what a waste….what a ripoff!!!! I am NOT happy Jan!!!!!!
