The iPhone 2.0.2 software update came out today and though its intent was unspecific ("bug fixes") it looks as if the results are truly impressive. Vincent tested OS 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 side by side in a series of speed tests using Mobile Safari and the results speak for themselves.

3G performance on the phone running 2.0.2 was by far improved. And though it may not be running at lightning speed, it's certainly a big improvement, especially when compared to the performance of the phone running 2.0.1.
You can see three side-by-side speed tests below. In each test, the iPhone running on the update completely loads iPhoneBuzz.com before the phone running the old OS even begins or gets close to completing. Tests where the phones were switched to use Wi-Fi loaded pages at about the same rate. Wi-Fi is also still considerably faster than 3G when loading a page.
Sure, this may not be the most scientific of tests, but it certainly seems like a massive improvement, wouldn't you say?

Put a piece of think sheet-metal between the 2 phones.
I’m sure there’s some RF interference going on there.
sorry but my 2.01 is as fast as the 2.02. i have done your speed test concurrently between yours and mine and speed is the same.
I’ll have to give this a real world test tomorrow to really get a feel for it. On another note, why do people do these videos with the TV blaring in the background?
Ben was that last question directed at me? No particular reason :). It’s either the TV, music or no sound at all. No matter what “we” do, it’s not going to be enough to please everyone.
Yea, I can understand editing some background music into a video, but leaving the TV on at a loud volume makes little sense. What is the focus of your video? Ambient sound is a powerful influencer.
That was just stupid. The phones were different models to start with(8 and 16Gig). The 8gig was the new 2.0.2 firmware and was wiped clean first… so it should be faster! The 16 gig which was 2.0.1 had bookmarks, and outlook content which is exactly what slows down the search bar, as it searches the phone…Do’h! and it had 3000 songs.
What a waste of time.
Steve Jobs, how do you explain the WiFi loading the pages at about the same rate then?
I am still hacked off I cannot forward an SMS message to more than one individual. Come on guys, if this is to be the real Christmas prezzie for kids this year you are in for a serious backlash in bad press.
I’ll make you guys a deal. The day that you guys stop making ignorant comments such as:

I promise to stop the annoying background noise — okay? I give you my word.
I did the same test with you and my 2.02 is taking the more time than you 2.01. it tooked my 2.02 to load your website 1 minute 34 seconds later than you 2.0.1
Maybe when it’s connected it’s faster. I don’t notice any fixes to the problems with 3G connectivity, which is the real issue.
I agree with Eh? – 3g performance doesn’t matter to me (compared to EDGE it’s already an improvement), I’m more concerned about connection issues, specifically how someone sitting next to me with their AT&T Blackberry has 5 bars in 3G mode while I get ‘No Service’ – at AT&T Park no less. I don’t like getting laughed at by Blackberry people pointing at me shouting ‘Your iPhone SUCKS!’
For me – 2.0.2 did not fix any connection issues.
Totally agree with @ No3G4U ,
There is something really wrong with the phone..suddenly from 5bars , the call will drop and i’ll get no service! sucks …regretting changing from blackberry to iphone
wow their are alot of complainers out there. It’s the iPhone the best invention since the computer. Any ways I have no problems with my phone, reception or much of anything ya some lags but if their going to fix it with updates that’s fine for me. Did you guys ever think it could be your carrier up here in Canada I haven’t had problems with fido or rogers. Acually my fido switches over to rogers to get better reception when I can’t get fido.
Yeah Doug. Problems can come from the carrier. Except the cases where the same carrier on two phones side-by-side shows dramatically different results.
i now have full bars on 3g where as before in the same place i am now typing this i only had 3 bars, pages seem to load faster, my gps finds me almost instantly now. so it worked for me im happy
espero bajando esta nueva actualizacion mejoren los mesajes ecritos ya que se hace super lentooooo pero en fin el telefono es muy cool jajajaja
I have never, never, ever complained about an iPhone, or allowed anyone to complain about it in my presence, but the last two softwrae upgrades (2.0.1 &2.0.2) SUCK. My phone has been bricked and I have had try to restore it three times before it fails to restore it to my latest sync and to get it to work, I ahve to set it up as a new phone, with the smae name. No idea if this will work. I hope Apple reads this site because here’s a plea: Test this stuff properly. I’m shocked at the hassle of the 2.xx versions compared to the ease of the version 1 phone. I don’t ever want to complain about iPhone again.
I bought the first iPhone the day it came out and bought the 3G same day that came out too. I am a windows user who likes apple computers and have a lot of respect for the company. Nevertheless iPhone 3G broke my heart. It is slow in UI and has probably the worst reception of any phone I have used in the past 10 years. The most important job of a phone is to make calls and if it can’t do it well it should not be used as a phone. iPhone has the best browsing experiance of any phone out there but the reception issues completely fail the phone. I am seriously considering selling my phone and going to balckberry. Apple are you listening?
2.0.2 update has made my iPhone run slower, not able to maintain an internet connection while moving from one cell to another and for some reason the speaker (since I use it as my alarm clock) is a whisper and I cannot increase it. I am rolling back to the last update and waiting for 2.1
I love the user interface on this phone, but the bugs are getting on my tits more and more each day. Volume control interface getting stuck on my screen – needs a reboot. Browser crashing, SMS crashing. Call drops. etc etc
Apart from the bugs, some basic functionality is missing, SMS forwarding, (Not sure what the guy was on about who said he couldn’t send to more than one person?!?!), Cut N Paste for URL, Notes, Numbers, Names COME ON… this is basic stuff.
The user interface is fantastic, the browser when it doesn’t crash is great… 2nd to none. But come on Jobsy, get the f*cking basic sorted out!! PLEASE!!
