Samsung P520 is compact iPhone competitor

by Chris Davies on July 24, 2007

Looking a little like an iPhone that has been through a hot-wash, Samsung's recently announced P520 cellphone might be the ideal non-Apple alternative for those with smaller hands or pockets. Just 88 x 54 x 8.9mm (shorter and thinner than the LG Prada) and weighing a mere 102g, it's a triband GSM handset with, frustratingly, EDGE rather than 3G. That 262k colour, QVGA touchscreen - measuring around 2.6-inches ... continued »

Google readies $4.6b cellular investment with broad openness provisos

by Chris Davies on July 23, 2007

MY iTablet forum member modmesilly flagged up a couple of Google-phone related articles for us this weekend, which give a few hints as to the search company's intentions come the wireless spectrum auction in which chunks of radio frequency currently used for analogue TV will be freed up by the switch to digital. There's no doubting that Google has the financial backing to invest - they're claiming to have ... continued »

by Chris Davies on July 6, 2007

Open-source projects can prove tricky to convert into dollar-collecting businesses, but OpenMoko seem to be doing a pretty good job with their Neo 1973 cellphone.  The device - which is an unlocked handset complete with full developers kit available so that individuals, businesses and organisations can shape the phone to their own needs - suffered from some delays recently, but OpenMoko are now announcing that it'll be on-sale to developers ... continued »

by Chris Davies on July 5, 2007

With the iPhone capturing headlines left, right and centre, rivals are undoubtedly having to step up their game in order to compete.  Were I someone from HTC, Sony Ericsson or Nokia I'd be looking to leak out my most impressive upcoming models to perhaps encourage potential Apple buyers to save their money until my product hit the shelves; now I'm not saying that details of their new Omni smartphone were ... continued »

iPhone competitor: Nokia e61i unboxing and first look

by Vincent Nguyen on June 26, 2007

I finally got the Nokia e61i, replacement to the e61 smartphone in today. I’ve been waiting since early this year, and it's finally here – a few days prior to the iPhone launch! Unfortunately, the best I can give you in terms of a first look are the images below and an unboxing video I made which also compares the e61i and e61. I'll be camping out in line ... continued »

Verizon plans to retain customers by trash-talking the iPhone

by Chris Scott Barr on June 26, 2007

We have already seen how Sprint plans to battle customers wanting to switch to AT&T to get their hands on an iPhone, but what about other companies like Verizon? Don't worry, they won't let you go without a fight either. They are choosing to point out the potential negatives of the iPhone, rather than the positive things their network has to offer. They point out that the lack of a removable ... continued »
