AT&T contract-free iPhone 3G confirmed: $499/$599

AT&T have announced plans to sell a contract-free Apple iPhone 3G, although they will not allow users pre-pay service but instead still require a standard monthly plan.  Both the 8GB and 16GB version of the handset will be on offer, priced at $599 and $699 respectively.

That’s a $300 premium over and above the standard, contract price.  Assuming you’re willing to commit to a 24-month contract, the 8GB iPhone 3G costs $199 and the 16GB version comes in at $299.

While there’s no long-term obligation, the contract-free iPhone 3G’s are still locked to AT&T and use the same pricing plans.  That includes the $30 unlimited data access fee.  AT&T will begin selling the handsets next Thursday.

I think I’m missing something here… They’re offering it without a subscription for a hefty premium, but since it’s carrier-locked and AT&T don’t offer PAYG for iPhone, you won’t be able to use the phone until you buy the subscription anyway…

Fair enough if you’re planning to bypass the carrier lock, but is there any LEGITIMATE reason to pay the extra $300?

I have a first generation Iphone that I paid full price for. I do not have a contract and pay month to month. I pay $20 a month (which includes 200 text messages)and my regular calling plan charge. I am wondering if they are lowering their monthly data charge for those who pay full price.
