WWDC Keynote predictions

As you probably know by now, we're going to be covering Apple's WWDC live this week. What can we expect to see at the conference? Here are a few thoughts.

WWDC coverage

We speculated for some time that they would be announcing the release date of the iPhone. They won't be doing that of course, since they already told us that it will be coming on the 29th. Since there's no way that Jobs will be speaking without mentioning the iPhone, we can likely look forward to some sort of announcement pertaining to the iPhone.

Since he's already told us about the release date as well as the ability to utilize third-party software sometime in the future, that takes care of some of the big stuff. However, there are still features that I'm sure we don't know about, so we can likely expect to hear about these. My guess would be more Google applications. I'm really hoping to hear that we will have the ability to use an IM client, but recent documents suggest otherwise. We also are expecting to hear about the release of the iPhone SDK.

The iPhone won't be the only thing Jobs talks about. He already gave us new Mac Pros earlier in the year, so I don't expect to hear of any major updates or redesigns. They also just gave their Macbook Pro line updated processors, so no need for any big announcements there. I would not, however, be surprised to hear about a redesigned iMac at the show. There has been much debate about this recently, and I have come to a conclusion. Why would they only update the processors on the Mac Book Pros, and not the iMacs? Surely if they were going to do it, they would have done so by now. My only explanation is that they have been redesigned and Steve is planning on announcing it Monday.

Something else that we can possibly expect is an announcement of new iPods. I'm pretty up in the air about this one. One can look at this one two ways. On one hand, it can be argued that the release of a new iPod could steal some of the thunder away from the iPhone, so they will wait until after June 29 to announce them. On the other hand, there are plenty of people that just flat-out won't be able to afford an iPhone. While they can't afford one, they are going to be drooling over it, and wishing for an iPod with similar features like a widescreen and touchscreen. So if Apple releases a new iPod, they likely won't lose sales on the iPhone, but rather get higher sales from those that wouldn't be purchasing an iPhone anyway.

Finally, the entire WWDC is going to be focused an Leopard, so we will certainly be hearing more about it. Since it was delayed, people are dying to hear about some new features, though I can't really begin to contemplate what we'll be seeing. We have already heard that that they've chosen ZFS as their file system, but other than that we haven't heard much.

Check back with us Monday for up-to-the-minute coverage of Jobs' keynote speech. In the meantime, what do you guys thing we'll be seeing at the show? Maybe he'll shock us with an Apple Tablet PC. I really wouldn't hold my breath for that one though.

WWDC seems a strange venue for a major iPod announcement.

Also, I think Apple has probably reasonably decided that they should do revs to the iPod in September/October so that they’re selling “the new hot” for the Christmas season.

I’d say that it’s more likely that we see a major iPod rev at the end of the current “Buy a Mac, get a free iPod” promotion (http://www.apple.com/backtoschool/). I think that’s September 16. Which might bring new iPods the following Tuesday (September 18).

WWDC is interesting in terms of guessing this year. Macbook, Macbook Pro, Mac Pro, and AppleTV have all recently been rev’d, so they’re probably not changing. New iMacs are possible. Small form factor portable is possible (but I think the slide was fake as well). Something about the mini is possible, but it’s equally probable that it could be killed or it could be rev’d.

So what’s the “One More Thing”? I’d love a free iPhone, but I’d be way surprised if that happened. Maybe early sign up for one, but that’s no better than 50/50. So perhaps Mr. Jobs has something up his sleeve that no one has thought of. But that seems unlikely since I believe Apple wants the world focused on the June 29 iPhone launch. Seems unlikely that Apple is going to take their eye off that ball this month!

Mr. Jobs could announce an updated ipod and date it for a September or November release, setting it just in time for the Christmas season. I bet that there will be more iphone programs revealed.

What I don’t understand is the lack of IM. I mean, I understand the reasoning everyone has been spouting off. Bust in on SMS sales. Blah blah blah.

Here’s my response. Has anyone seen a Windows Mobile smartphone in action? Wherefore art you oh Messenger… Oh, there you are. Right where you should be. hmm.. Blows that theory out of the water now, doesn’t it?

It won’t eat out SMS sales. At least not for me. The only person I text with SMS is my wife. When I get the iPhone, I’ll still text her with SMS even if I did have IM. The peopel I IM with iChat are a different set of people than I text with SMS, and they’ll remain that way until everyone I know has an iPhone and then I’ll dump SMS and replace it with iChat.
