Truphone brings Skype to iPhone

Truphone has added Skype for iPhone and iPod Touch, allowing users to make calls and instant message other Skype users. This new features go live on next Monday, January 12.

Currently works in 33 countries around the world, Truphone uses the iPhone’s own address book. Making a Truphone call is easy: just open the Truphone application and dial as normal.

Truphone’s Skype feature for iPhone follows the release of similar services (client-based applications like fring and Nimbuzz, or web application like IM+ for Skype).

Anyone has tried of these applications? Which one do you like best?

i already test fring, but untill Apple unlock VoIP over 3G, in my opinion are useless!

I can’t get Fring to work over WiFi in my 1st Gen iPhone. No idea why, but it worked to begin with, and then just stopped.
My favourite VoIP app is Siphon, which I got from Cydia – it’s free, and works from your contacts list.
I would love to have a Skype application. I have kept Fring, so I can use Skype IM, which seems to work quite well, and will start doing more research about why it doesn’t work.
My problem with Truphone is that it doesn’t work in Russia, where I live, and you can’t get around this. Looks like a nice app, though, if it works, and adding Skype is great.

Thanks to some developers on the cydia network, There is a simple fix for fring over 3g. IT works great and its not some hack for all you brown nosers to apple. He fixed the short comings of apple and makes everything much easier to use on the iphone. With out jailbreaking the iphone would be a waste. (my opinion)

Only in your dreams, or the dreams of whoever told you this tal story. There is no sign of Skype in Truphone, no announcement (unless you count this sorry writeup as such).

I’ve used both Fring and Truphone for quite a while now on various phones (Truphone did an extensive public test with totally free worldwide calls to any mobile and most landlines for over a year, if I remember rightly). I don’t have a problem with Fring, but for me, Truphone is the more innovative of the two. This also means that the software also tends to be more temperamental to, but this will probably be ironed out given time.

I suppose the best way to differentiate the two is that whilst Fring is purely a ‘piggyback’ program on various chat services, Truphone is, first and foremost, a separate service that just adds other features to enhance it. You buy Truphone credit, and to answer a previous comment, the calls can be routed through the phone service when away from wifi (which would be of benefit when making international calls). The call quality on Truphone to Truphone wifi is also exceptionally good, compared to a slightly delayed conversation on Fring. To be honest, though, we get 600 minutes and 500 SMS on our plan, so I’d be hard pushed to break through that limit, or even half of it.
