TODAY’s Vieira: ‘I don’t know why it’s doing this?!’

That’s Meredith Vieira looking indecently pained for someone holding an iPhone (we’re more used to seeing a look of absolute, ethereal peace); turns out that Apple may need to put a “not suitable for TV hosts” sticker on the cellphone’s packaging, since Vieira’s inability to use the “intuitive” handset rather scuppered an odd setup on The Today Show.

Thankfully it wasn’t an important feature like the full Safari browser or video playback that so stumped Meredith; it was just answering a call from TODAY correspondent Matt Lauer.  For some unknown reason the Apple feature was punctuated by a fake call-in; the host should’ve hit the answer key at which point Lauer’s audio would be piped through the studio from the satellite feed (he was in the UK), but instead the iPhone kept ringing and Matt started talking.

After giving up the charade, all involved guffawed nervously while Vieira’s co-host repeated the mantra “we should tell you that it’s really easy to use” as the cellphone-klutz herself rocked dangerously on the sofa and berated her general experience of technology.
