More than 6,000 iPhone games now available

There is no doubt that the iPhone is going mainstream now. There are now more than 6,000 iPhone games on the iPhone application store, according to iPhone app tracking site Mobclix.

The digital distribution service, which launched July 11, 2008, is home to over 20,400 apps across multiple categories, of which games comprise 23% (the largest slice). 17% of all iPhone games are in the puzzle genre.

The site shows that there are currently 6,165 games available, of those 1,485 are free and the rest are for purchase.  One of its interesting breakdown:

puzzle titles making up more than 23 percent of the mix, and arcade in a distant second with 13 percent of the titles. It is heartening to see that educational and kids games tie board and strategy in the mix.

How many iPhone games have you downloaded so far? How do you think?

With this many applications/games I can not imagine how difficult it will be for Palm or Blackberry to attract customers away. The amount of money that individuals spend for the applications, plus the fun they are getting out of them, makes for something extra “sticky”.

At first I used to dl only the free applications but as I started to read more and more about independent developers I could justify spending 3, 4, even 5 bucks (sometimes 9.99) for the high quality games.

Looking back to the “game” page on my phone I see that there is not one single free game on there. Maybe this is because I downloaded the “lite” version and spent the money to upgrade to the “full” version. Regardless, there is so many new games coming out every week it makes it so easy to drop 99 cents here and there. I would like to see somewhere in iTunes a total tally for how much has been spent. Then again… maybe I do not want to see that. haha.

    Thanks for sharing the info!

Howdy! This post could not be written any better! Reading this post reminds me of my good old room mate! He always kept talking about this. I will forward this page to him. Fairly certain he will have a good read. Thanks for sharing!
