Latest iPhone issue: dying power bricks

Latest in the spate of odd iPhone-related hardware problems comes news of some owners’ troubles with the AC adaptor.  Jason D. O’Grady over at The Apple Core has had both his and his wife’s give up the ghost on him; within 24 hours of each other, they simply refused to charge the handset.

iPhone AC adapters suddenly stopped working

Jason’s iPhone charges okay when it’s connected via USB to his MacBook, so it’s looking like the brick is at fault.  In fact they’re not the only ones to have trouble; there are a number of reports of similar issues among the forums (see here and here).

It looks to be a straightforward case of swapping it at your local Apple store, but so far there’s no word from the company as to whether it’s a recognised fault or being treated as a random occurrence.

the same happened to mine, however i was vacationing in an old lake home and attributed it to crummy wiring shorting it out. these things happen to power adapters so still not sure if it’s a defect or if these adapters are just doing what they’re supposed to do: blow out if there’ s a major surge in the power. i was just happy it didn’t blow up my iPhone!

i threw it out, but guess i should have just thrown $30 in the trash instead if Apple is replacing them for free. d’oh.

If there’s an Apple store near by, schedule an appointment to see someone in the genius bar.

The exact same thing happened to me! Only about a week after getting the iPhone too. When it happened to me the apple store employees had no experience with fixing the problem because I had to bring my phone and charger in twice. The first time they replaced my dock and assured me that everything would work fine, but of course an hour later when I returned home and tried to charge my phone, it still did not work. I eventually got the brick swapped out for a new one and I haven’t had any problems since.

My adapter stopped working after the first full charge. It may not have been fully working for that charge, but at least it charged the phone completely from empty to full.

I spent some time trying to figure out what was going on. I have some iPod adapters laying around the house. 1 USB based and 1 FireWire based. The USB based iPod adapter didn’t work either. I tried changing cables as well, same problems.

I finally found my FireWire based adapter and a FireWire to iPod plug cable and tried that. It wored perfectly. I don’t understand what is up with the USB based adapters, but since the FireWire based adapter is working fine, I’m happy.

I just thought it was me that was experiencing this problem. It’s good to know that others are seeing it too.

Anyway, if you are experiencing this problem, and happen to have a FireWire based adapter laying around. Try it, it will probably work.

Same thing happened to me. Then the next day it worked again. I went to the Apple store, they didn’t know of the issue but replaced it with no hassle. I skip the Genies bar whenever possible. I knew it was the adaptor and I wasn’t going to make an appointment. The employee just opened a new box and exchanged it. Very easy like it should be.
