Is that a front-facing camera I spy?

Since the big announcement last week, every picture and video which included the new iPhone 3G has been put under a microscope by enthusiasts. One video that has been making the rounds is below. Roughly 5 seconds into the video you get a glimpse at the iPhone 3G, with something strange in the top left corner. Is it a smudge, or perhaps a front-facing camera?

I’m actually going to guess that it is the second proximity sensor that was mentioned last week. While I’d love a front-facing camera, I’d think that if it were included, Steve might have mentioned something by now.

If it’s a caamera the 3G will have it’s utility I guess.. (video call)

Maybe I have no imagination but I certainly can’t think of any reason Apple would keep such a feature secret during their *launch* of the product. I’m guessing sensor as well.

No, it’s the ambient light sensor…

  4. If you watch the HD version of this video from Apple’s site, you can see this looks more like an oily finger smudge than a camera. And that would explain why this ‘camera’ appeared mid-way in the demo, and subsequently disappears from the iPhone as Phil continues to demo Mobile Me.

Please face reality. Unless SJ was sicker than we think, do you honestly think he would have left that feature out of the announcement. Let’s face it, it appears that the world will have to wait for a front-facing camera until the next version iPhone is released. Personally, I don’t that we’ll have that long a wait. I’m betting this first iPhone 3G is a basic transition model. Look for a Pro model before Christmas. I’m allowed to dream, aren’t I.

yes i agree with Constable Odo, but i think i am going to still buy the 3g model because it just looks really sick and also it is coming to Canada :)
