Canny developers are discovering that there’s more to making an iPhone-friendly web-app than shrinking the column width; a good example is InfoSpace, who are taking on the mighty Google in a war of search with their Find It! site.
Rather than setting out to offer the full scope of search that Google has done so well cornering, Find It! instead concentrates on specific usage scenarios such as restaurants, phone numbers and business searches. It’s a reasonable strategy, and one which shows they’ve put some thought into how people will be using their iPhones out and about; when you’re our on your lunch break looking for a local shoe-repair shop you want simple categories and pared down results, unlike the full cavalcade of information Google is good enough to offer.
Information Week’s Eric Zeman has done a head-to-head comparison of Find It! with Google, and while the whole article is worth reading it’s the conclusion that really clinches it:
“As much as I worship at the altar of Google, I have to say, Find It was more intuitive and produced a much better list of results that mattered to me” Eric Zeman
Have you tried Find It! – and would you let it tempt you away from familiar old Google? Let us know in the comments.
