Flirting with disaster

It seems that the forthcoming iPhone is attracting a lot of developers wanting to make a buck. I can’t blame them, Steve Jobs wants to sell 10 million of them next year, so you’ve got a large potential customer base. One such person is Miguel Sciaudone, otherwise known on Flickr as msciaudone.

However, in order to make his buck it seems that he has decided to create a false buzz surrounding his dating application for the iPhone. He contacted Macworld UK and told them “This will be an application running on the iPhone in summer. It’s currently in development and will soon be in Beta testing. It will not be a Widget.” So naturally, people have assumed that his program is going to be a full-fledged application. That’s what it sounds like to me.

He just failed to leave out one minor detail. It’s a web-based application, not an actual iPhone app. He went out of his way to let us know that it’s not a Widget. What a pointless statement, if he’d just said that it was web-based, he wouldn’t have needed to clarify whether or not it was a Widget. He also could have saved us all the trouble of covering a product that wasn’t what it seemed.

So now this piece of software that seemed pretty pointless in the first place (what with the millions of dating sites out there and all) just blew the only thing it had going for it and turned out to be web-based. You’re going to make the layout of the application match that of the iPhone, big deal. Google could take their Docs & Spreadsheets and format it so it fit on an iPhone, but that wouldn’t make it an “iPhone application.”At the end of the day, it’s still just a web-based program.

So what have we learned today? If you don’t want bad publicity, don’t try to fool people by playing word-games. While Miguel didn’t “technically” say that the program was going to be a full-fledged iPhone application, he carefully worded his statement so that we would believe it was. So if you’re going to make an application that can run on pretty much any browser, say so. That will prevent you from having to having to clarify yourself in a crappy email and a comment on your Flickr page.

Just so everyone knows, we here at My iPhone are dedicated to bringing you all of the latest news related to the iPhone. This includes the latest release info, accessories and applications. We do this to benefit you, our readers, and it also helps get the word out for developers and manufacturers. By doing this we are trying to create a community where you can learn everything there is to know about the iPhone, and discuss it with other like-minded individuals.

It isn’t in our nature to single out an individual developer or company, however, this person has apparently gone out of their way to deceive the media by claiming their software is something that it isn’t. On top of that, he was extremely rude in communications not only with us, but with our friends over at Gizmodo as well. If you believe that something is incorrect on our website, or that we’ve improperly used a photograph, just let us know and we’ll be happy to look into it; there’s no need to be rude about it.

Why would anyone beleive that Apple is letting some random dating company make a full application for the iPhone even though it’s obvious Apple is keeping this very proprietary and closed?

Yipes. I feel bad for anyone that actually thought this WASN’T a web-based application. This is the HOLDING PATTERN people. Google has a collection of customizeable web-apps for people’s personalized homepage. This “web app” clearly looked to be the same thing to me, especially if there isn’t a joint release with Apple. I only glanced the Gizmodo article and made a quick assumption before moving on. Reading this article going on and on and on about how this guy “deceived” people is really ridiculous. For instance… heard about the Deeda Pi phone? I know exactly what this is just by looking at it. FAKE. Hopefully lessons learned.

This post makes me feel a bit worse, considering I stopped by here today to see what iPhone news the website specifically RELATED to the iPhone had, considering the amount of new iPhone news spinning around lately. Seeing the amount of space dedicated to poorly impuning some random guy’s character was more than a bit embarrassing to read. Instead of wasting time complaining about stuff that will continue to happen… post news about the latest study released, Apple financial results, or any number of useful topics.
